Meghan: Flower arrangements are one of my favorite things to use when decorating. They add so much light and color and energy to a room. And then I mean just look at them. They are beautiful. They add that perfect finishing touch. And when I was a little girl, I came to this very flower shop and watch them as they put together these flower arrangements. And now, today I am getting my chance to learn how and I mean it cannot be that hard, right?
I am hitting the road, searching for answers and finding great design it is a quest for beauty, function and of course inspiration. To learn how to arrange flowers, floral designer Vicky Wenstrup did not just show me. She actually made me do it. But I was up to the challenge and like I said how hard can it be to make a floral arrangement. We started by choosing flowers which is a very important step. The best flower arrangement start with a good combination of flowers. So, Vicky suggested to look a textures first.
Vicky: The textures add depth and interest to your bouquet.
Meghan: Really?
Vicky: Yes.
Meghan: So then, do you want to make a lot to different textures in creating a bouquet?
Vicky: That what I personally like to do. I mean you can do just all one type of flower but if you do a lot of different types, you will get all that interest with a depth and just that focal interest.
Meghan: And it will give it more character?
Vicky: Right.
Meghan: Select a variety of textures and height for your flower arrangement to make it interesting and do not forget about color. When you pick out colors you can really pick out any colors?
Vicky: Any colors will work.
Meghan: Yes and then how do you go about mixing the colors? Is it the same way you do for like any room. You just mix colors that look or the other or other rules in flower arranging?
Vicky: Just kind of like when you get dress. Colors that go together or when you design a room, different shades, I mean you could do all monochromatic which would be a bouquet like this. So this is all white.
Meghan: Yes.
Vicky: Or you could do all pastel colors.
Meghan: But enough for about picking flowers. Vicky spent most of the time showing me how to arrange them and here are the steps to follow. Step one. Put your greenery in the vase. Do you always start with greenery?
Vicky: It makes it easier when you are doing a vase like this because you just have an open area and when you start putting your stems in, you can put them in where you want them and they will stay foot.
Meghan: Oh, so the greener will hold up the flowers?
Vicky: It kind of locks in place.
Meghan: I see. Ss you put in each piece of greenery and later the flowers, make sure to remove the bottom leaves and cut the bottom of the stem at an angle. That will help your flower arrangement to last much longer. And I recommend using scissors to cut the stems. The knife method Vicky showed me. Well, let us just say it was not that easy, it ended up roping my stems apart when she was not looking.
Vicky: Put it awkward. There is definitely a trick to it.
Meghan: Yes there is—
Vicky: Put it up. Again, hold your knife up against the stem and pull it down toward you.
Meghan: And just shred in this thing.
Vicky: Yes.
Meghan: Step two. Add your flowers. When placing the flowers in your vase think of an odd numbers.
Vicky: An odd numbers of flowers look better than even numbers, did you know that?
Meghan: Really, so you just group it in three’s or five’s or anything odd?
Vicky: Anything odd. It is just more pleasing to the eye.
Meghan: The first flower you should add are called structural flowers. Structural flowers are the tallest flowers in your arrangement.
Vicky: We start with the top, so that will give you the height of your arrangement and then fill it in.
Meghan: All right, also try to create a demo flowers that is rounding all sides.
Vicky: Well, you can do a one sided arrangement but working on a circular is good because if you sit it in the center of the table, you can see all the way around it. And then also too, if you would sit it on a table that has a mirror
