Welcome to Growing Wisdom. I am going to give you a tip today that is the ultimate green tip. It is what to do with all those leaves that may have fallen in your yard this season. Leaves are a great source of nutrients for the garden. And so many of us just end up throwing them away, myself included. But one of the things I have started to do is to recycle them into the garden. Let me show you what we have got.
I have started to do this already. What I want you to notice is I have got this bed here and I have taken my leaves and I have mulched them up, and I had used these around all of the beds. These will break down sometime during the middle part of next summer into gardeners gold. They are going to create wonderful soil for the gardens. So let us show you how these works.
What I am going to do is I am going to mow all these leaves up. Will just do a few for you on this segment and then we are going to chop them up to create what I showed you earlier. So the first thing you want to do is get the leaves up. You could do this with a rider mower like I have. I borrowed it from my neighbors or you could simply break them up and then grind them. So let us get some of these up and let us bagged them.
These leaves have been chopped up somewhat but they still resemble leaves. I want to chop these up even more. I am going to put this on my driveway. My neighbors are going to think I am out of my mind but what that is going to do is enable me to pick this up and chopped them up even finer again, so they will break down. You could do the same thing on your lawn. You do not have to do it on your driveway. It is just easy to get them on the driveway because they do not get stacked in the grass. So let us do step three.
One of the things I am doing while I am spreading these leaves out is being sure that they are not too deep. If you are going to go over them with a mower whether it is a rider mower or hand mower, you do not want them too thick because they will clogged the mower up. It will also make it easier for them to be re-shredded. You could buy a shredder at this point and I could have put these leaves through a shredder. But if you have a mower, why not just use the mower, so you do not have to invest in another piece of equipment and then save your few hundred dollars. Re-mulched them the second time and look at this beautiful mulch that I have. I am going to take these and bring it right down to the garden and spread it around. Let it sit there all winter and these will breakdown next spring and give me those wonderful additives for the soil that all the plants need.
