Non-profit organizations are using maps more and more tell there story. Here the New York City Coalition Against Hunger uses their map to help people find farmers markets in New York City.
Here is an interesting map that overlays census data with other types of information that this organization finds important to tell the story about.
One of the things about maps that difficult is there are a lot of programs out there. In fact, the field is exploding so much it’s almost impossible to know which tools to use. We’re going to help you, to figure that out a little bit to yourselves.
We’re going to ahead right now and create a map using Zee Maps. Lot of these tools is inexpensive sometimes even free. Zee Maps for example, you do not even have to register to use this mapping tool.
We are going to ahead now and create a map about the food pantries in the area around the center city of Atlanta. Let us go into another one of the markers. You click on details again here, you can click on media, let us stay with details. Now, for this particular organization if we go back to our data source, what we have here is something information about the organization that is not simple contacted information. Actual narrative, we can take that paragraph text, we can drop it to the description field.
Here is an interesting function the ability to actually link videos. In this case, there is YouTube video about this particular food. Well of course, and their clicking around on this map is connected to the Zee Maps server. So, all these steps and functions, very simple to use—adding markers, changing the sizes of pens, creating hyperlinks to connect people to website, putting in basic information about the organization, contact information, maybe information that is more promotional, videos, photographs, whether you're fund raising, whether you are trying to activate people, whether you are trying to connect them to services maps can be very powerful.
