All right welcome to another NoBS quick and dirty portrait workflow. This is exact same thing as we did 99% of the time, takes just a few minutes to get accomplished. First thing, you know, I have to get a good capture and you’ve got to get a good wipe out. So, proper exposure, proper white balance, you don’t really have to do that much, just a few minor touchups.
So, let’s just get right into it. First thing you’re going to do is a defog. Everybody should know this, it’s filter sharpen, un-sharp mass with the amount of 20-60 and all that does is just take a little bit of the haze out finish up the image very, very nicely.
Next, I’m just going to go in with my clone stamp under lighting mode with a low opacity. This one here is around 22. And I’m just going to go in and just give my wife a few little cosmetic touchups. She’s got really nice skin so I don’t really have to do that much to begin with.
Perfect! Now, the reason why I zoom in this is it seems a little bit—because I’ve got the image size set to 72DPI just so it runs quicker in this tutorial.
Next thing I’m going to do is I'm just going to take my dodge tool and under mid-tones with the little opacity, I’m just going to go in. And then I’m just going to highlight the catch lights in the eyes just a little bit, perfect there we go, beautiful!
Next thing, I'm going to add soft, give my wife that nice, smooth soft looking skin with a modelesque style, there we go. Now, I’m just going to take my mid-tones and I’m just going to pull my mid-tones down a bit. Blend that softness into the image a little bit more, perfect. It’s all personal preference. Now, I’ve got my history brush set at 100%. I'm going to bring back her hair, you know, her shirt, I want a lot of detail in there because those parts of the image should not be softened.
I’ve got my wife looking over my shoulder right now. Just give me that little scowl. All right, I’m going to go over the eyes, I'm going to go over the lips. Now, I’m going to take a big, big brush and at about 30% opacity and then I'm just going to take a swab there, a swab there just to bring back a little bit more detail, perfect.
Now, I'm going to just do a little veneering and I’m going to take dodge tool for this or sorry my burn tool. And I’m going to start in highlight mode. I have brushed just a little bit too big so let’s bring the brush down. And I’m just going to go around the edges just like that, just to give the mid-tone something to bite on.
Now, I'm going to go into the mid-tone mode and I'm just going to bring that in. I'm a heavy burner. Perfect, just like that and there you have it.
Now, color wise, you know, on my monitor I know this looks great on my monitor but that’s just because I got a beautiful white balance. And I can always go into selective color and I don’t remove some because I add a little magenta, whatever but I know the color on this is great, so you know, I’m ready to send this to the print. Anyway, that’s the quick and dirty, right. You do a quick little defog, a little bit of touchups usually clone stamp and lighten darken mode. Add whatever softening technique you wish to use, bring out the catch lights in the eyes. I mean we can go to town with this and then just isolate your subject in the frame and this is how I do it with the burning and there you have it.
