Male: It is Halloween time and guess what? We have some cool experiment that might spook you and into loving science. My science helper, Zach, and I are going to be talking about dry ice. Zach, what is dry ice?
Zach: It is a frozen carbon dioxide.
Male: Exactly right and frozen is the word to say because it is negative 110 degrees below zero. Fair high to be said so it is really, really cold, is it not?
Zach: Yes.
Male: Okay, what we are going to do is we are going to place this into the water, what do you think are going to happen to the dry ice?
Zach: I think it will bubble up.
Male: Bubble up and we are going to put some in here. This is not smoke but a little cloud forming up above it. Here is what is going on, this is different from the ice in your refrigerator, is it not? Because it is going from solid to a—
Zach: Gas.
Male: Gas, yes, so they called that sublimation in meteorology. So, I want you to grab a piece with your gloves on and I want to put some dish detergent in this graduated cylinder which is warm water and we just drop it in there.
Now, it would not explode and we would not catch on fire, but you start to see the reaction taking place and look at these bubble, is that pretty awesome? And you take that quarter that I gave you a little bit earlier.
Zach: Uh-huh.
Male: Let me see it, I want to show you something. We have a quarter here, I want to put it on this dry ice, and watch what happens, listen up? Do you hear that?
Zach: Uh-huh.
Male: It is screaming. Are you not scared yet. You can also put this in your pumpkin. Have you ever thought about that. Carve out your pumpkin, put some warm water at the bottom of your pumpkin and throw a piece of dry ice in there and you start to get all of this cloud coming out, and again this is frozen carbon dioxide gas. Let us put some more right here. Grab the glove and put it in there, very cool.
