How to Create a Christmas Stocking-Filled with Greenery
When it comes to creating unique holiday decorations, I always seem to gravitate towards those that are made with natural materials. It’s amazing the combinations you can come up with using things like greenery, pine cones, fruits of all kinds and even moss.
I know this may seem like an odd material to use but it actually makes the perfect velvety green covering for this door hanging which will take the form of a Christmas stocking. It’s really simple to put together. I started by cutting a pattern out of a piece of brown paper and then I cut two pieces from some 1-inch mesh chicken wire. I cut these pieces about an inch larger that the pattern. And when I cut the wire I try to leave as long tying as possible to tie the two pieces together.
To make the form, I just folded two or three inches of the top of the wire down to create a cuff and then I sewed if you will the edges all the way around by crisscrossing the wires back and forth. And to give it body, I just gave it a pool like this.
Now I’m ready to wrap the form of pieces of burlap securing them with hot glue. The fabric serves as a smooth surface for attaching the sheet moss.
For a little contrast I’m gluing a row of glossy, green, holly leaves along the cuff of the stocking and for the perfect accent, a cluster of berries on the toe. This deep cavity will hold a range of greenery. I’m going to fill it up with the deciduous holly that’s loaded with red berries and then put a bow on it. This is a simple alternative to the classic holiday rift. And the wire form for this decoration will last for years. From the garden, I’m Allen Smith.
