Narrator: The process of creating a modern toys starts with the inventor who often works with the toy company strike a balance between technology, functionality and appeal.
Daniel Chun: It is flying toy with flapping wings. That is different from any other propulsion technology.
Narrator: Daniel Chun from Interactive Toys says his company dreamed of duplicating the Leonardo da Vinci’s bird like ornithopter design.
Daniel Chun: The gentleman actually asked joins of a ornithopter. Never show the flying –
Narrator: Of course, unlike the master’s design, this creation actually had to work.
The Interactive Toy Team took inspiration from a full scale attempt to create a mechanical bird.
Daniel Chun: The vamp is actually power by few bolts and cranks of the wings and different from any propulsion technology which used propellers of some sort.
Either way, you are actually trying to gain lift or thrust.
Narrator: The team of aerospace engineers at the University of Toronto had been trying built a successful ornithopter since the early 1970’s.
A few years ago, they started getting sure that reliable flight out of the thing which gave hope to the toy makers.
The secret for both full size and toy ornithopter was to allow the wings to create more upward lift while flapping down. In disturbing less air while moving back up.
In both cases, the wings also have to withstand the pressure exerted by the constant flapping.
