How to Create a Rap Mix Beat and Mash Up
On behalf of Tvlesson.com, my name is Eric Roman otherwise known as DJ Empire. Let's talk a little bit on how to make a rap beat. Today I'm using a program called Fruity Loops Studio Edition, let's take it over to the computer and show what I'm working with.
The first thing you're going to need to do is set your kick drum which is the beat itself. In this case, I'm doing quarter notes and I'm going to actually skip one and give it a rest and put a snare in its place and keep the snare together. This is how you have a swing to your beat. You can also place your kick drum wherever you like.
Once you're done with that, you can then add your hi-hats as many times as your light, here and you have it in quarters. Or you can even get more creative with it and place your snare in your hi-hat anywhere.
Once you have all that information, all that sounds and stuff put together, you can go into your bass lines and add bass lines and different audio forms that might enhance your audio and then you drop your vocals. Once you have your vocals set, you have your rap song done.
I'm going to show how to make a mash-up at home. I'm using a program called Ableton Live. Depending on the version you use, some features may not be available. Let's go to the screen and let me show how it’s done.
The first you’re going to need is your audio source. I'm using the Vanilla Ice’s Ice, Ice Baby. We’re going to process the audio and remove certain elements of the song. In this case, I’ve removed the bass line and I'm going to maintain some of the highs and some of the mids and it should sound something like this.
You can also change the speed of the song to match what you needed to match. I want to make sure that I don’t have too much of the original beat of the song here available. Once I have that available and have the voice as how I want it, I then take my second source which is my beat. In this case it’s going to be California Love by 2Pac Shakur. If you’ve done everything correctly, you will have a mash-up done very quickly.
This has been DJ Empire, thanks for watching.
