Welcome to Common Man Cocktails I’m your host Derek Schommer and today we’re going to be creating the Red Manhattan. But before I do that, go to everydaydrinkers.tv/ vote before I forget go off to holocost.com and vote for us and you know like, “Hey you ask that yesterday,” but, you could do it everyday, it’s awesome.
So I want to number one at least some place in the top 10. So go there and do that. What we’re going to do today is something a little different, it’s the Manhattan and we’ve done the Dry Manhattan, there’s also just a regular Manhattan, which is a sweet vermouth, these we’re mixing it up a little bit, this is a Jim beam recipe kind of, it’s the red stag whisky, which is pretty neat. I reviewed this, this is a black cherry whisky. I think it’s pretty new, so you want to check that if you’re into Jim Beam and you’re looking for some of the little different for whiskeys to change things up. And that’s what I want to do today is change things up.
And use some dry vermouth and I’m going to use some sweet vermouth and we’re going to stir this, we’re going to put it into a cocktail glass, we’re all about cocktail glass this week. And ice that up a little bit and we’re going to see with the taste like because I haven’t had it but, I believe I got—I don’t where I got the recipe from what you got the Red Stag review samples, as I center the bottle itself, they have a little recipe book. And so I was going through them and a lot of more like just doing some basic stuff and I wanted to go classic but still change it up a little bit.
I think that’s what I’m doing. Here we go again we get our ice. We’ll start with two ounces of the Red Stag. And so basically, it’s a natural black cherry infused whisky, you’re getting that whisky with the hints of black cherry. We’ll do a half ounce of the sweet and a half ounce of the dry, pour that in there.
We are done with the classicness, we stir it with our little uber bar spoon here from uberbartools.com, it's just their neat little spoon. And then make sure we’re going to garnish with the cherry, that’s classic, right? That should do. Go about 30 seconds, 45 seconds if you’re really intense and that’s going to get you a good tester. This is probably maybe not so seems pretty cold. I just don’t want to bore you and with the stirring.
Now remember, I haven’t had this, so I don’t know exactly what I'm in for. But it seem pretty neat, so I have to give it a try, and here we go, use our bar spoon of pop and I guess they’ve built a little stems on there so, with these I’m going to pop the stems off and drop it in there. People, if you know what happen to stems, some of them call for how they’re keeping there stems on but I like to take them off to give it a more classic look.
So there you go, that right there is a Red Manhattan. Now, technically doesn’t look at that red it looks like a regular Manhattan, but you’ve got the black cherry. It smells like black cherry and you get the cherry in there to help kind of visualize bring you the right place mentally.
It’s very -- I don’t know how to explain it. It’s sweet but dry. I think the way they balance, the black cherry itself, it’s obviously going to be a little more sweeter because you bring in cherry into the whisky and Jim Beam whisky and a lot of classic whiskies have a little sweetness to them, a little oak to them and you’re getting that but, you’re also going to get a little dry back in from the dry vermouth. And then sweet vermouth really kicks it up a little bit, so it’s so well balanced that’s it's even hard to explain. But, what I do like is it’s different and I think that plays a lot into specific type of cocktails. I sent this out in the newsletter, but I just want to reiterate, it’s really cool to try a different brands like I’ve never had --besides when I get to review, I had never had the Jim Beam, Red Stag and I’m going to only know if I’ve had original Jim Beam.
But, it’s neat to try different styles and different cocktails and different brands and different labels, but it's also neat to try the different taste that you get. That is the Red Manhattan, pretty classy. I’m your host Derek Schommer don’t forget to vote for us at everydaydrinkers.tv/vote and check out our new site everydaydrinkers.com. It kind of looks like a magazine now, that’s where I kind of going for. So there you go we’re teaching you how to drink.
