Speaker: Do you have a tod and worn out old fireplace that you just don't want to sit near anymore . Well, have a look at this. We took one of those fireplaces and transformed it with stucco, this is now an architectural masterpiece that I think you should try at home.
Now this house has a fairly colonial design style but the young homeowners really want to stop putting a little bit of a modern touch on it. This is going to be a champagne colored sand and what it's going to do is really enhance the fact that this fireplace is the focal point in the house.
Now one of the most important steps in this entire process is the bonding agent because what we need is, the concrete or the render, once it goes onto the bricks to stay there forever. In the old days when my grandfather's next door neighbor taught me how to stucco, we used to mix up concrete and sand. These days you can buy it already blended together perfectly for much better results.
I am going to let you in on a tradesman's tip. You get the bonding agent, and put a couple of little drops into the actual mix, just like that. It dirties it up a little. It's going to make it dry quicker and it's going to stick like mud on a blanket. You see that! Look at that, it's more like toothpaste. When it comes to color, stucco is available in a number of neutral shades. And some stores will even create custom color blends. Now this is champagne colour, it's very close to the wall color. And we wanted something in the same family, we didn't want them to compete with each other.
What we need to do now is run a series of groves in the first coat of stucco so that when we come along with the top coat, it adheres to everything that's firm. Now there's a couple of different ways you can do this. I am using a nice straight steel trowel giving those very modern and sleek look. If you wanted to have a little bit of texture, all you need is a brush. Wipe the brush down the concrete like that, that gives you a real sort of rustic textured look. But I still like the smooth.
So what I have here is a trowel, that actually has a sponge attached. What it does it gives you a really smooth finish. Subtle texture blends in beautifully with the colour of the wall. It doesn't take away that adds to this room.
Now when I first walked into this room I noticed the fireplace for all the wrong reasons. Now we took up a bag of stuff out and four hours worth of labour, and we transformed it into something that's beautiful. I think you have to agree that this is definitely a feature of the room now, not a aisle.
