On behalf of TVLesson.com, this is Roy Pastor. I’m a BCA accredited advanced level instructor with BilliardAcademy.com.
In this clip on advance billiards, I’d like to show you how to curve a cue ball. Now in this particular shot, if you look at this layout, I’m shooting on the 8 ball in the game of 8-ball and my opponent was clever enough to put his ball in the way. I cannot get this ball in a straight line so the 9 ball is in my way. So what I’d like to do is what’s called a Massey Shot, this is actually a Half Massey Shot. I’ll attempt to curve the ball around the 9 ball.
The definitive work on Massey Shots was written by Gustav Coriolis, a famous physicist in 1835. So this has been around for a long time.
To make this shot, I’m going to elevate the butt of my cue at about 30-45 degrees and strike down on the left side of this cue ball. I’m going to aim to the right of that 9 ball and let’s see if we can get the cue ball to curve.
And that’s how you make a Massey Shot. But, there are other ways to make cue ball curve that you may not be aware of. Let me show you a different way to make the cue ball curve in the game.
Now, in that Massey Shot, I struck down with an elevated cue on the left side of the cue ball. Now, if you look at the setup that I have here, I’m striking the object ball at a slight angle, a cut shot. I’m not going to use the Massey technique that we just looked at. All I’m going to apply is a reverse back spin. I’m going to hit the cue ball low and watch what happens to the cue ball after it strikes the object ball just by hitting the cue ball low.
If you watched, the rotational energy that I put on the cue ball caused it to grab on to the cloth and curve the cue ball towards me. So you have to be very careful because not only will elevating the cue and putting siding whish on the cue ball would make the curve, rotational energy, top speed and the bottom also makes the cue ball curve. That’s how you make a cue ball curve in a game of pool.
