Charleston
Female: Now that we are dancing to intermediate tempos, we decided to include this Charleston as one of our final dance moves.
Male: Charleston works the fast tempos, but do not try it with median with slow tempos as just does not look good.
Okay the Charleston is another eight count dance. We are going to first teach you the folk work. Facing you first, gentleman on your regular rock step you go back on your left same of the Charleston.
Female: Ladies on your right.
Male: Then for our first version of the Charleston. Step forward to your left guys.
Female: Ladies forward on your right.
Male: And then give that kick with your right guys.
Female: And left kick for ladies.
Male: And bring it up. Step back it goes rock, step, step, kick, back. Rock, step, step, kick, back. One, two, three, four five, six, seven, eight.
Female: Step, kick, back.
Male: Let us turn around and try it facing the other direction. Five, six, beginning with the rock step.
Female and Male: Rock, step, step, kick, back. Rock, step, step, kick, back.
Male: One more.
Female: Rock, step, step, kick, back.
Male: And good. Now, here is how to do with your partner. We are at V when we in close position. Your hand is usually on the middle of her back when you want to lead in to the Charleston, you give her a little bit of push with your left hand, bring your hand to her side and really bring her back with you with on the rock step.
Female: And you open her up so that she is right next to you. Like the open up. If you remember that on our first tape.
Male: Then on the open up, what we did is we curve her around. At this time, I am going to keep my hand there, keep her close to me and bring her straight forward as we step. Then, we give a little kick.
Female: He paused up on my body with his right hand and so my foot cannot touch the floor. He keeps my body up and so I know that this is going to be a kick.
Male: And then I bring her back with me. So, it is going to look like this.
Female and Male: Step, step, band on a rock, step, step, kick, back. Again we, rock, step, step, kick, back.
Male: Let us try it from the other direction. Five six, a basic two steps then
Female and Male: Ready, step and the rock, step, step, kick, back, a rock step, step, kick.
Male: One more.
Female: Rock, step, step, kick, back, rock, step, step.
Male: Now a fulguration of this is to hold her up there, keep her wait there and we go rock, step, step, kick. Now you can hold her up there so she can go back and that is her signal to kick behind here and in front here. Sometime it takes couple kicks and she will get the visual.
Female: So we are doing two kicks instead of just one.
Male: Two kicks in front, it will like this.
Female and Male: Rock, step, step, kick.
Male: One, two then bring her back. At this time, three, two, three bring her back. Again, rock, step. This is intermediate leading and following. What you are doing is not just singling or what move to do. You got to actually place your body on the correct foot. The Charleston is a great way to get started on that.
So, let us try with some music, some intermediate music. Five, six, two steps then we go, step and a rock, step, step, kick. Two more time, step at this time. One, two, three. Let us try that from behind. And the third one, we are going to give three kicks, just two steps and the basic, five, six, five, six, seven, eight, step. Here we go, rock, step, step, first time, second time, now stay up there. (Music playing).
Now, you can see when we meant when we said it is much better to fast tempos because it looks kind of silly doing this move with something so slow. So we are going to try it from both angles with fast tempo.
Basic just the two steps, the first rock step. We bring her next to you and try it. Five, six, five, six, seven, eight, step, step, rock, step, step, kick, back. Second time, third time. From the other angle, five, six, five, six, seven, eight, step, bomb, kick. Third time, step there.
Here is a little bit more difficult version of the Charleston, more advance and great for fast music. Where as we always kick on five on the other Charleston, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Now, we are going to kick two more times. We are going to kick on one, two, three, four, five and seven.
Female: So a total of three kicks in the basic Charleston.
Male: It is going to look like this. One, two three, five, six, seven, eight.
Female: Kick, kick, kick, down. Kick, kick, kick down.
Male: Now something to remember on this is the kicks on three and seven, they are not really big kicks, do the smallest one. And only you can think about him is almost like a hesitation. You put your foot out and then you step on it. Same with the seven, eight. It looks really silly when you go, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One, two, so that looks really ridiculous.
Female: And your kicks get a lot of control.
Male: Yes. Ladies, try to model the leads kicks. Anytime you are dancing a mirror image like that. Visually watch him and try to follow his kicks. Now, let us try to get those kicks down that counts down. First facing you and then facing behind. One and two is the rock step. Here we go,
Female and Male: Rock, step, kick, down, kick, kick, step, rock, step kick, kick, kick, step, rock, step, kick, kick, kick, step, rock, step, kick, kick, kick, step.
Male: Okay, let us turn around and try it from behind. Five, six, five, six, seven, eight.
Female: Rock, step, kick, kick, kick, step, rock, step, kick, kick, kick step, rock step kick, kick, kick, step, rock, step, kick, kick, kick step.
Male: You get in to this the same way as the other Charleston. You do your two steps to the basic, one two and then you can start counting one, two again because you are going to pull next to you. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
One thing fun about this, make sure it look behind you. Make sure no one is right there. You can go way down on the rock step.
Female: And again, the ladies should mirror what the leader is doing. If he is traveling with the Charleston or making really big stretches, then she should follow him.
Male: Let us give a try to this advance Charleston facing you then again the wall. Five, six, a basic then we go. Two steps.
Female: Step, step and
Male and Female: Rock step kick, step kick, kick, step, rock step kick, kick. One more.
Female: Kick, kick, step rock, step kick, kick, kick step, rock.
Male: Do not look at your feet while you are doing any of these moves, but on the Charleston it looks really funny on people have a rock, step, kick, kick, kick. You will be surprise how much you see that. Let us try facing this way. Five, six, a five, six, seven, eight.
Female: Rock, step kick, kick, kick, step, rock, step, kick, kick, kick
Male: One more.
Female: Rock step kick, kick and a kick step.
Male: Let us try that to some music, some fast music.
