Host: Sometimes you are contacted because in a routine examination, a pediatrician notices some blood in the kids urine and he looks it's been there for a little bit and he sends it to have you evaluated, why is that?
Steve Friedman: Blood can be sign of many different diagnosis. Blood can be a family benign issue which just runs in the family, it can be a sign of kidney stone, it can be a sign of infection. So any time blood is noted either microscopic or visually, it should be investigated including and beginning with a sonogram and further test depending on what that shows.
Host: But usually it's nothing that serious, what occasion that you get surprised at?
Steve Friedman: Yes, most of the time it's a benign finding and it's just followed with urine test annually, but we do need to be aware if it is anything more serious, even though it is uncommon.
Host: If you can see red urine, how should we approach that one?
Steve Friedman: If you do see red urine, then doctor should be contacted immediately and either a methodologist or urologist do an evaluation to check for the courses.
