Children are very resilient; they tend to bounce if you like. I have actually had a child out from the first floor window that had no injuries at all, not for self, but actually no interest at all fortunately. But the panic in the parents and everybody would be the sign was causing more problems than the actual child themselves. So you cannot emphasize enough that you've got to try and keep calm and even if you don't feel like keeping calm.
Well, and actually in fact last night when I've got home from work my youngest son had come from his school, played basketball and broken his little finger. It happens all the time. It doesn't mean for a broken finger that you need to get an ambulance, just needs strapping out that's all with that. Obviously you need to go to the hospital, get X-rayed, etcetera.
If we are talking about things like broken legs, you've got a slightly problem. It isn't a good idea to take a child with a suspected broken leg to the hospital yourself in the car because especially if it's the top bone in your leg, the femur, and there is just one bone there. It's a very strong bone; it carries the whole weight of your body. If it breaks the potential for it causing further damage inside is really great and number one, if a bone breaks like that, you bleed inside, and also if you've got two bits piece of bone wrapping around in the body, it's going to damage muscles, blood vessels, etcetera. Something like that needs an ambulance.
So if somebody falls over, wherever and you suspect that they have broken a leg, you need to leave them exactly where they are. You do the same thing as you would for any other injury illness. First of all, check that it is safe for you to go there yourself. Now why we hopping on about making sure it's safe for you, well, if you don't, even you are worried about your child as a parent, you will be, and if you don't make sure it's safe for you, you won't be able to help your child if you have an injury yourself. So you need to make sure it's safe for you first of all, then go to your child. As long as they are breathing and there is no problem with their airway, don't move them, because she can cause further damage; never move a person.
If it's something like their arm, fair enough, you might be able to move them, but a leg or any other break you need to not move the patient. You need to get the ambulance so they can be removed properly with no further that injuries incurring and you cannot stress enough.
