How to Deal with Clay Soil in Your Garden
Now a lot of people have clay in their yard and I just do not know what to do about it. Now the problem with having clay is that it is very compactable. It is made up of very small particles and these small particles will hold a lot of moisture once it gets wet and it does not hold a lot of air. So for plants that need air down their roots, it is really not a very good thing.
So, to get rid of it you got to do two things. First of all you should add gypsum lime is a lime that actually would not change the PH of your soil. What it does is it will break down the clay similar to the way that salt breaks down ice.
So, it works its way through the clay and then makes it into smaller particles. Now the problem with that is if you do not do any thing, the clay will re-compact and it will become a big problem again, so you have to add organic material to that clay that you have already broke up with the gypsum, which brings me to the organic matter.
Now the organic matter can be just about anything. It can be steer manure, it can be mushroom manure, or it could be compost, could compost set up your own home compost. Mix it in and that will enable this clay particles from not getting back together and if you keep doing that year after year you will find you have not an ugly clay but very good workable soil.
