How to Deal with Conifers

Hi, my name is Blaire Glen. I am ISA certified arborist and I am going to keep this presentation rather brief. I was driving by and I took this picture of two Blue Atlas Cedars one on the left was recently harshly prone and the one on the right has never been touch. Now this tree was pruned far to aggressive it was shape all the way around some body sold this person on the aesthetics of having this tree nice surrounded cutting it back all way along maybe there were older maybe they were sold on fear type of pruning but this is highly unnecessary and really hard on the tree. Blue Atlas Cedars as are the seeders susceptible to a lot of problems. They are very sensitive trees to both insects and diseases. The best thing you can do for this type of tree is really leave it alone you can take out the dead branches you can take out branches that are crowding each other or getting in the way but for the most part there are variety of tree that you just leave them alone. The tree on the right is exactly what the tree on the left look like, and you can see the amount of foliage that was taken off they took off better than half of the growth on the tree and I believe they are going to cause this tree to go into decline. Now many of the conifers are sensitive trees timing is very, very important you should never trim a bleeding conifer such as the pines and the furs and the spruce and many of the seeders you should never prune them when it is hot. This should always be reserve to the colder times of the year for a couple of reasons the pitch exudes much slower and the insects are dormant so by waiting till the colder time of the year you are giving the tree a much better chance. Now I am showing you a picture of the Douglas Fur and this particular tree was top why it was top is unknown but if you look at the limbs that are growing around this top cut you can see there getting very long and very leggy. In time as this top cut continues to decay and it is indeed decayed each of these limbs will become much weaker and in time, they will start to fall of.
