How to Deal with a Bike Puncture
So, what happens if you get a puncture? Well, if you’ve got a repair kit with you, you’ve got a chance. This can be stored underneath the saddle, taken off when you get a puncture. Inside it, you'll need inner tube, some tire levers and lastly some gas. Get off your bike, move to the side of the road, take your wheel off and start to change the puncture. You're going to use your tire levers. You got to come to this side of the tire; it’s away from the valve.
Use the tire lever to take over the tire over the edge of the rim. Take a second tire lever, fit that in and then move around the tire taking the tire out from the rim. Take the inner tube out that you’ve punctured and then feel for where the puncture has occurred. This is very important. If you put a new tube in without checking to find where the puncture has occurred and then you start again, you’ll probably get another flat.
If you find the spot, remove the debris from the tire. In some cases, there won't be any debris but do this check anyway. If you’ve got a pinch flat which can happen when you hit a pothole, you won't find anything in the tire but again as I say, check it.
Once you’ve finished checking your tire, take your new inner tube, make sure you undo the valve and feed that back into the wheel putting the valve section in first. Feed that into the wheel and place the tire back on the rim. You want to start from the valve side, which is the opposite to the way you took it off. We started from the non-valve side, so you start from the valve side and then feed the tire back inside the rim.
You're then ready to use the gas to inflate the tire. Screw your gas into the connector making sure that it’s pierced the gas canister and connect your gas canister onto the valve making sure you’ve got a good connection. And then release the gas into the tire. Once it’s finished, take the gas canister off the tire, turn up your valve and you're ready to go.
