I’m Holly Friedland, I’m program director of the Midatlantic Reptile Show, we’re talking about
how to care for a corn snake. In this segment, we’re gonna talk about, is a corn snake the right
pet for you? When you purchase a snake and you should buy snake either directly from the
breeder or from a rescue and not from a pet store, because that way you’re buying this snake
directly from the person who bred it. Corn snakes can live about 20 years, they get about 5 feet
in length. You should know what you’re getting into before you purchase your snake, and a good
way to do that is to get a book about snakes so that you can know what you're getting into before
you buy it. Corn snakes make a really good pets because they’re very hardy and docile animals.
They’re easy for kids to handle and they’re very good eaters, which can be a problem with a lot
of pet reptiles. They are pretty easy to breed, so if you're interested in something that you can
keep and breed, a corn snake might be a good choice for you. In order to find out what sex they
are you need to have a sexing probe which should only be use by a person who’s a professional
who knows how to use them. But basically the tail on a male is longer and thicker than on a
female. That’s basically how you choose what kind of pet snake you want to get, next we’ll talk
about the enclosure.
