Using porcelain slips to decorate
Hey youtube! What’s up? This is Off Centered Potter. Today, I was doing some decorating my slips and I thought maybe you would like to see some of that. I am going to be using just a porcelain slip today and some amazing stains to do decorating technique. Those of you that are experience potters, I am sure have done this or seen this before, but maybe this is something that the beginner might seen and like to use. I think everyone should experience porcelain. Go out and buy a block or bag of cheap porcelain clay and throw some pieces with it and keep all of your throw water and left over slip to use on your workshop, just be sure you do not contaminated it with other clays while you are using that.
But I think porcelain slip is a great thing to staple to have in your workshop. It is fun. You can do all kinds of things with it. You can use it as is. You can add stains and color suit to make the different colors of slips. You can paint with it. You can just do all kind of fun things with porcelain slip or darker slips from other clays like B3 brown mixer or black clay. You can do some interesting things with those slips also. So go out. Get up lot of cheap porcelain. Draw some pots and save your slip to use. I have a whole bucket of it and I use it for all kinds of different things.
So, I am going to show some things that you can do with it. So, here I have just a small amount of the porcelain slip and I am going to take this mason stain. This is a purple mason stain. I am going to add it to the slip just like that. Use my paint brush and mix it up. And the slip that I am using, I have run through a filter a couple times to make sure that there are no little clumps of clay and things like that. That is important to do because you wanted to be a nice and smooth texture with no grit and little rocks or anything like that.
And so what I have here, okay. So I mixed this up. Made this interesting purple slip and here is a piece that I have already fired once and you can see I have scratched a little design in it. I am just going to kind of take flip this purple slip and just dab it into the design. Let it kind of set for a minute and just kind of let it soak. It is also depends on how much you want the design to show up. If you wanted to show a very dark then you want to make sure that all of the gross are filled. If you wanted to just kind of be emphasized by slip then maybe it is okay. If not, every part of a group catches some of the contrasting color. So I have just applied that.
Okay, I am going to kind of take that little longer and let that dry a little bit more before I start wiping that off. Okay, then I am going to go on after it and just kind of gently like that away. Okay, you can see how the purple slip is staying in the design. It is much easier to see gives it a real neat effect. Now you are going to want to go back and cleaned up like ground around there. Some of the areas where it caught into the groove of the piece, but you get the idea and you can use this almost like under glaze. You glaze on top of that and obviously the color will be of the glaze will be influence by the slip or you can just clear code it and leave it like that. You can do all kinds of funny things.
So this is one thing you can do. I am going to show you another thing that you can do with the slip.
Okay, this is porcelain bowl that I throw earlier. And I was going to show you—everything that you can do is using the slip can also gives some banding. So I am just putting that on the wheel. I like this because one, it is a lot cheaper than the guises. Two, it is neat to use it for decorating because you never have the risk of it running in the cone, getting on the cone shelf. It stays put because it becomes part of the actual clay body. And this technique has anything new. It is something that potters that have been doing for a long time, but I just wanted to show you guys some of the things that I do with it.
The other thing that you could do which I do not want to do with this bowl, so I am not going to do on the video, but another thing that you could do is you could paint the slip on there and then you could take a tool trying to find one. I guess this will work. You can use like one of these little scraper tool things or carving tool things whatever those are called. And then while it is still grain, you can carve the designs into the places like right here where you have the slip and so the clay from below will show through. And so that is kind of way to do and reverse what I just showed you a minute ago. You can actually get that way.
So, lots of ideas and I am sure there is everything that you can do with porcelain slips or any kind of upright slip, but those are some things that I m doing in my workshop. Let me see what you are doing in your workshop. Until next time youtubers. Adios
