How to Decorate with Citrus
Inspiration for holiday decorating can be found in the most surprising places like the Produce Department at the grocery store.
I know Citrus like oranges, lemons, and limes may not seem like obvious candidates but they’ve been used in decorating for centuries. For instance, an easy way to give a fresh garland like this a little like Citrus is to simply attach a few fresh lemons. I pierce the ends of the lemons with an ice pick, and then slipped a pipe cleaner through them, give them a twist, and tie them under the greenery. I like using these pipe cleaners because they won’t tear it through the rime of the lemon like wire has a tendency to do.
Another easy way to decorate with fresh citrus is to make a spice ball using an orange, some cloves, and a cinnamon stick. You know, children really get excited when they can take part in making ornaments for the season. Spice balls will dry naturally and last for a year. That’s one of the nice things about citrus. These lemons, I’ve dried last year, you can see they’ve held their shape and they’ve turned this golden color. It’s easy to enhance the look of this fruit. A cutting slits or other shapes like the star into the peel before drying. They can be beautiful hanging on the tree or garden, or along the sliced citrus. They can be easily dried into the hydrator.
I suppose another reason I like using citrus in decorating is its aroma. It’s so crisp and clean, the perfect complement to fresh holiday greenery. From the garden, I'm Allen Smith.
