Lise Simms: Hi everybody! I’m Lise Simms here with five facts that you’ve absolutely have to
know about your kitchen lay out. Fact number one basic design functions, did you
know your kitchen has three basics functions? You have meal prep, you have
clean up and you have utensil storage. So, if you are thinking about reworking
your kitchen plan, now is the time to ask yourself a few key questions like, how
come we make these functions more efficient and make my time in the kitchen
more pleasant. And how do I use my kitchen? Are you single? Are you a family
do have pets? All of these questions are going to leave to you to fact number two
the work triangle.
You may heard the work triangle, you may heard the word triangle right? This is
the basic design concept where your sink, your stove and your refrigerator are put
at the far points of the triangle to make your movement more efficient
unfortunately things have change a lot since that idea can about in 1950. I mean
where you put your microwave, I mean where do you put your wine? And food
isn’t usually made from scratch anymore; we actually need double the storage
now. In my house they’re more than one cook as such my mom is on the kitchen.
so a lot of modern kitchens are trending to a new design concept called the work
station approach. This is where 8% can do a separate task without bumping into
each other.
Fact number three the work station, now if you live alone or you’re a single cook
kitchen then the triangle is perfect for you. But if you have a house full then the
work station may actually make your meal prep whole lot things here, here is how
it works. Each work station is centered around and made your appliance in its
landing area, you want to make sure that you have a designated lighting overhead
and then no two works stations are too close together. And then you need at least
15 inches of space right next to the station, this is your landing area to place
things down a knife, a spoon or a bowl. Facts number four the kitchen item, a
design trend that’s here to stay. It has virtually replaced the kitchen table and in
the most households it is entertainment center. Kitchen items do off for you a lot
of extra prep area in formal setting, extra storage and if you have the budget why
not toast in an appliance or two a dishwashers, a prep sink, maybe those pull out
refrigerator doors.
If you are considering putting a kitchen island make sure you have the space for
it. It does require a minimum of 42 inches on each side so the cabinet doors don’t
bang in to each other and you know what? Bigger is not always better, you don’t’
want to create an obstacle that you just have to move around all day long but you
know what it can also be a focal point. Her is your chance you can either use the
same materials as your counter or why not splurge a little bit here and make it
really something special.
Fact number five keep it light, a lighting plan is an absolutely essential element to
any kitchen redo. And it can really enhance the lot of your space, remember it
accomplishes several important functions, task lighting, ambient light, mode
lighting if you want to highlight any architectural features. So make sure your
lighting plan fits your lay out, after all you don’t just want to see what you are
doing you might actually want to see your gorgeous kitchen.
There you have it and don’t forget, come straight to me for five more facts about
making your dream kitchen of reality, I’m Lise Simms. See you next time.
