Here is another great kitchen question and it comes from Chris in Redondo Beach, California. Now he writes: my kitchen is a great size for me. But it's last remodel was probably 15 to 20 years ago, and the age is showing. It needs an upgrade desperately to fit into my crazy beach neighborhood. We can make this kitchen beachy in just a few steps, I promise.
Let's look at your space. We've got these upper cabinets that separate your kitchen from your living room. If you knock those down, you can make this whole room airer, more open. Now if you want to do a little beachy touch, how about pendant lights like we used here? Maybe blue or amber or how about some stools? You can get stools for as little as under $50 at some of your home improvement stores. That creates a real laid back vibe too.
Okay now, that backsplash you have, the brick one, it is not saying beach to me at all. I say, you say bye bye to that backsplash and bring in something a little lighter, more laid back. This is a custom mural of a beach scene. Now if that doesn't say beach, what does? Or try glass tiles, I mean like in this space. There is something about glass that's so fluid, it so reflective, it gives you that same feeling almost like the water.
Now, another real inexpensive tip, wall color. Just bring in color that remind you of the beach. Here we did a beautiful golden yellow color on top of an orangy sunset color. Now check out the wall mural that we did in a wallpaper. I love the shape, it's so organic, it reminded any of the waves of the ocean.
So another way you can add a beachy thing is changing out your countertop. And I say think about quartz. Quartz is a beautiful, beautiful kind of man-made composite materials. They are virtually maintenance free and indestructible.
Another one now to think about is marble. Marble gives you that dramatic kind of open feel with all of the gorgeous waning. The thing about marble though is, it is a lot more porous then say quartz, and it requires a lot more maintenance.
But regardless when you're thinking about a laid back theme, think about colors you can bring in and remember, countertops have lots of color option.
Alright great question Chris. Remember to keep lifestyle and location in mind when you're designing your space, because it should all make sense together. Alright, another kitchen dilemma solved. See you guys next time!
