Hi, my name is Tim MacWelch run Earth Connection School of Wilderness Survival and Ancient Skills in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Today we’re going to show you a series on how to survive in the woods.
Our first clip is survival priorities. How do you prioritize the things you need to do to stay alive in a survival situation? So the first thing we might want to consider is the rule of force. A person can only live for four minutes without oxygen. Well, there is plenty of air to breathe unless were in a cave in or an avalanche so that’s usually not a concern. The next rule of four, is four hours you can only live four hours if you’re suffering from exposure in other words hyperthermia. So shelter would be something we could do take care of that exposure if it was from cold. Other shelters could be use to protect you from heat and other types of extremes.
The next rule of four would be four days, a person usually could only live about four days if they had no water so getting and finding and purifying water becomes a main priority after shelter. The next thing we want to consider in the rule of fours is four weeks. The average person could only live about four weeks without food. That is a pretty low priority in most survival situations but it is still an issue.
The next rule of four we would want to consider is four months, a person could only live about four months and keep their sanity without companionship and then the final rule of four you might want to think about is four years, four years without purpose in life or without any drive to guide you would pretty much make anybody go crazy.
But today we’re really going to focus hard on the immediate survival rules, shelter, water, fire, and food. First off, for shelter we’re going to show you in a subsequent clip how to make a shelter out of sticks and leaves that would keep you warm in extremely cold temperatures even with no sleeping bag or blanket just with the clothes on your back. Our next priority is a little bit of a toss up. We might need to make a fire to purify water to make it safe to drink but truthfully the next priority should just be water, we've got to find enough clean, pure, water to keep us hydrated everyday. So that’s the second priority.
Our third priority, typically is fire and we’re going to show you how to light a fire with one match and we’re also going to show you how to light a fire with a traditional technique of the bow and drill in subsequent clips. Other things you might want to consider about fire would be to always have two sources of fire. The next thing we’ll want to consider is food. This is a pretty low priority however keeping something in your stomach will improve a person’s spirit, morale, and it will give you something to occupy time while you're in a survival situation.
Now other subsequent priorities might be things like tools, supplies and other types of items that you would need to help your situation in a great outdoors. But the big four would be shelter, water, fire, and food. So next we’re going to talk about how to build that first shelter out of sticks and leaves.
