Taster Status. Being a taster implies that you have a gene that enables you to taste a compound called Phenylthiocarbamide or PTC, which occurs in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.
Because PTC is not an altogether safe substance, a similar compound known as Propylthiouracil or PROP is what scientists use in lab test. Some people are non-tasters, and lack the gene which allows them to taste the chemical. Others possess the gene to taste PROP and are called Tasters, as they can taste the substance, but do not have a strong reaction to it.
Finally, a few people are known as Super-tasters as they have a very strong reaction to the substance, and are completely repelled by the taste. The ability or inability to taste PROP can tell you a lot about your body's metabolism. It can help you determine many of the finer distinctions among the GenoTypes.
In order to determine your taster status, you will need a PROP test kit. This can be found in the GenoType test kit. You will also need the assistance of a friend. First, taste the white control strip, you should not taste anything. Second, taste the PROP or yellow strip.
If you do not taste anything, you are a non-taster. If you perceive a slightly bitter taste, you are a taster. If the taste is so strong, it repels you, you are a Super-taster. As you can see the gentleman in the film is obviously a Super-taster.
To learn more about the genetics of Taster Status, refer to pages 51 through 52, in the GenoType Diet book.
