Carrie: All right next question from Zuna guys.
Robbie: Hi, Zuna guy.
Carrie: Zuna says, “Hi Robbie. Can you help me or point me in the right direction to get my Canon MX 700 multi-function printer working in 8.10. It is a network printer over an internet connection that works perfectly with XP and Vista. Scanning would be a plus but if I could just to get it to print that would be great. Thanks in advanced from Zuna guy.”
Robbie: Okay! I’ll do my best buddy. Anytime anyone says Canon I go more like smirk. So what we’re going to do is visit Linux printing. So this is the Linux database, Linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting. So what we want to do is find out if your printer is supported so go over here. Go up to printers, go to show all printers made by Canon. I'm going to need that model number there, Carrie.
Carrie: I think its MX 700.
Robbie: Thanks! I'm going to hit control F which is going to bring up my find dialogue. MX 700, there it is right there, the Pixma MX 700 I'm going to click on that and it tells me your printer is a paperweight which is a equivalent of saying you know what don’t bother. It’s not worth your while, just go out and buy better printer and you know we hate to say that but it’s paperweight.
Carrie: That is so funny he calls it a paperweight.
Robbie: And I call it boat anchor, and so you can scroll down and they will tell you know this is what other people have done to get certain features working. It seems to work under Linux with proprietary driver or turbo print by USB link. The network supports requires the SNS and people had trouble getting it set up so it might be possible if you follow the instructions in that website but it is like they say a paperweight.
So usually, anytime I am going to buy a printer I am going to check this database first. I want to know that printer is going to be supported in Linux and it is not Linux this fault it is the manufacturers. They need to start developing specifically for all different platforms not just for the commercial ones. Let us put it that way. So it’s unfortunate but good luck with that but they do say that the USB length should work for you.
Carrie: All right.
Robbie: Sorry. It isn’t enough to give better news but at least that shows where to look when you are to going to replace it.
