How to determine the Best University to Attend - Part 4
Welcome to the video series determining the best University to attend. This is the 4th video in this series. My name is Markis Landis Gardner. I have taught in American Universities for many years and I’ve taught in high school and Universities in China for about four years.
This video series is dedicated to helping parents and students find the best University to attend. In this video series we will talk about three types of people. The shy student, the outgoing student with lots of friends and who is happy to be with any friend and also the outgoing student who does have some close friends who he or she spends a lot of time with.
Of course this video series is a generality and will not fit all students. If you wish for me to help you or your child, please contact me at info@adreamforabetterworld.com. For this video series it might be helpful to get the free workbook at www.adreamforbetterworld.com. This 4th video is dedicated to determining whether you or your child should go to a University close to home or far away.
We will continue to look at eight important factors then deciding whether to go to University close to home or far away. These factors in no particular order are the type of student, family help ventilated before the past, friends, location money and opportunity.
In the second video we talked about the type of student, family health, been away before and location. In the 3rd video we’ve talked about past and friends. In today’s video we will talk about money and opportunity. Going to any University takes money good universities take more money. Of course we are not just talking about tuition but leaving peace too. Plus if we go to a University that is not in the same state where you live the tuition is much more expensive.
Money, to go to a school can from four sources. Scholarships, this is available to the best units regardless of need, cash this from you or your parents, three loans, this is usually from the government based upon work and need and work. This is work that you do at the school and any part time job you may take to help pay the bills if aloud.
Scholarships come in many forms, full scholarships for the brightest students depending upon GPA, N or ACT scholars as well as those excellent in some sports. Now partial scholarships are available for many reasons. Sports, subject for example if you are extremely good in Math but not good enough in other subjects to get a full scholarship as well as diversity.
In America each university must prove they are diversified, people who are White, Black, Asian, Mexican, American Indian etcetera to attract people who are not the normal type they often will offer scholarships up to full scholarships if they are a small school and can’t get enough people in. This can be seen especially at historically back universities. They have a hard time getting White to just to go to the University so they will offer full scholarships for White students who have a pretty good but not necessarily excellent GPA.
If you are unable to attend the University because of money you can always try to look at these types of Universities. To see if you can get in cheaply, especially if you are different demographic then what they normally get. Also because of American laws you can get small scholarships by buying for large scholarships designated for certain demographics. For example, if an organization offers scholarships for women and men might apply and they will probably get them a small scholarship.
If a family can afford University then there are no problems for money, otherwise they were loans. For Americans loans are decided on what the government believes your family can afford, unfortunately what they believe you can afford and what you think you can afford can be wildly different.
This can call great stress on the family as often times this difference can be quite large and cause financial hardship for the family. Causing the family to think of ways to pay what a difference or tell their son or daughter to go close to home to a cheaper university.
Family needs to talk about this and look at all the options before making this desperate choice. Finally, the last option is that the student works. This may not be an option for students from another country. Of course tutoring is always an option as University is usually turning the blind eye for tutoring.
Next, we will talk about opportunity when a student graduates from high school many opportunities may appear and he or she would have to decide what to do. One example maybe military, while I have nothing against Military especially officer candidate school, I think military should be thought of after University. However, if and I repeat, if there is no way for your child to go to college because of finances then through the Military might be an option because you can also go to University too.
Working for a Periods Company, sometimes a parent may own a company and say work for us and take over the company. Well that is a wonderful idea, you really needed educated employee. So first make him or her go to school like any other employee. So he or she can make well informed decisions. They may want to take the year of to do some traveling while these sounds like a dream come true this is actually academic suicide.
Universities really don’t like breaks and education; they think you will forget everything you learn. Another opportunity is maybe he or she is taking about getting married and or having a baby. This is the disastrous. While love is wonderful and this day in age both parents need a good education and work, marriage should wait till you finish University and have good jobs.
That is all we have time for in this video, we will talk about how to find the best University in the next and final video. I hope you have enjoyed this video. Please watch the last video in this series to see how to choose the best University to attend. Thank you very much for watching.
