Once you have a feel for the ready position, the next step is to understand the role of the non-dominant hand. To find the answer consider this. You are at the net in your ready position and have a split second to react to hard hit shot, what is the fastest way to present the racket face to contact the ball?
In the ready position, the racket hand needs to be relaxed, which allows my non-racket or left hand to set the racket quickly to either side. Of course, you have to first decide which hand is which. Take a look at Biju(ph).
Okay Biju, let's get serious and now take a look at Colindy(ph) showing how to properly use the non-dominant hand so that it works with live balls coming at her at about 60 miles per hour.
In this ball machine drill, the balls are coming in a random pattern in rapid succession. In Colindy's case, we gradually got her used to hit hard balls by increasing both the speed and frequency of the ball sped from the machine but we did it one step at a time.
Here is you had another exercise that we have used to help Colindy improve her volley.
