Today I’m going to talk about diagnosing a problem or something. Like let’s say you installed program, right? And you try to open something like, I don’t know, maybe—or something, you click on it but it doesn’t run, it doesn’t show you any error message, doesn’t show you nothing and it’s hard to figure it out when you don’t know nothing or any error message. But they do show an error message but the only way you can get those error message, you actually have to use a terminal. And you have to run the software and like if it’s Banshee, you just type Banshee right? If it was Banshee you just type Banshee and you run it and then it’ll tell you an error, if it doesn’t it’s kind of harder to figure it out. But we try and diagnose like, you know what the causes are.
And if you don’t know the commands to it, you can always open the menu editor right? And in the menu editor, you just—you know go to the app—GTK record my desktop, alright. And you want to open the launcher and then you see the command, that’s what you’ll type in into the terminal. And it’ll probably show you a message or something, or some dependencies that you’re missing. It’s usually how it is, so I have this program here and once I double click on it, it does nothing. See, it does nothing. I don’t know the reason is but to find out, like what the reason is, I would have to execute it in the terminal.
So I’m going to do that and I’m going to see what it says and hopefully I’ll have an idea what it wants. So it says error loading share libraries and then—they say I need something to do with this. So pass their message, usually when error message with these type of things, you just search in the synaptic package manager. And you try to find, you know the name of that and then install all the packages that—and then you know, try your luck to see if it works. And if it doesn’t, you hit a Google, alright, and just type in whatever the libraries or the dependencies or the error message that it’s talking about. And you have a better idea of how to fix it. So that’s just my tip of, you know, how I diagnose a program that doesn’t start or give you anything and I hope that’s useful.
