Symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD include patience, fidgeting, and an inability to focus. Diagnosing ADHD is tricky, so the first step in any examination is for the doctor to check a detailed medical history. A physical examination will be performed including hearing and vision tests. Questions should be asked about classroom performance, interpersonal relationships and inability to focus among other topics. It is particularly difficult to diagnose ADHD in children five years of age and younger because children change very rapidly during the preschool years.

Diagnosing ADHD in teenagers can also be challenging because of normal adolescent hormonal fluctuations.
