How to Diagnose ADHD in Kids

The doctor must consider that the symptoms are persistent for six months or longer or interfering with the patients ability to function and they are indeed more severe than the behavior exhibited by other children of the same age.

Expect at least two doctor’s visits before diagnosis is made. Referral assessment of your child should extent outside the doctor’s office. Questions should be asked about classroom performance, interpersonal relationships, and ability to focus among other topics it is particularly difficult to diagnose ADHD in children five years of age and younger because many preschool children exhibit some ADHD symptoms.

In addition, children change very rapidly during the preschool years. Diagnosing ADHD in teenagers can also be challenging because of normal adolescence hormonal fluctuations. ADHD is not simple to diagnose, symptoms may not be easily distinguishable from normal child to behavior. It can also be caused by other disorders.
