How to Diagnose Osteoporosis

Ten million Americans have osteoporosis. How are these people diagnosed? One way to diagnose osteoporosis is with a routine X-ray. Since the bones in someone with the condition appear much thinner than healthy bones. Unfortunately, they are not effective for early stage osteoporosis. The better way to diagnose the condition is with the more advanced scan known as a DXA. The short procedure uses a very small amount of radiation to measure the bone density of the hip and spine. The bone density of the patient is then compared to that of average on adults of the same sex and race who have peak, healthy bone mass. This comparison is written as a negative number called the T-score. A T-score greater than -1 is normal. A score between -1 and -2.5 is classified as osteopenea, while osteoporosis is a number less than -2.5.
