Male Speaker 1: It’s spring, kids get running noses, they get you know all kinds of viruses and worried about a little bit of flu but some kids just have allergies with running nose and no more, they will red eye, they cough a little bit. How do we differentiate from mal case for flue from kids to expose there is something in the ear?
Male Speaker 2: It’s a very important question. We have lots of patients now with allergic rhinitis, hay fever type symptoms, running nose, watery eyes and these symptoms have nothing to do with an influenza virus or any infection for that matter. The way we can tell the symptoms come back every spring. My child is sick is last spring in the same way with a running nose, he is sick this week with the running nose. His eyes, his nose are itchy.
Influenza virus never causes anything to be itchy. Whenever you feel that your child is scratching and he is itchy that is an allergy not an infection. In addition, a good physical examination can help us judge the difference between a viral infection and between an allergy. Different appearance of the nose, different appearance in the eyes and so with a good exam we could also tell whether this is an allergic problem or this is an infection problem.
Male Speaker 1: So thinks good judging where a doctor can differentiate it and -- she stay calm and just select things right away if she had been.
Male Speaker 2: Absolutely, when your child is having symptoms, you want to make sure the symptoms are not severe you want to work with your physician to judge what’s the proper medication, what’s the proper precautions to take to stay calm, treat your child appropriately and do not feel concerned that your child is going to terribly ill until your doctor takes a look at your child and advices you properly.
