How to Dig Basic Footing

Start by cutting several lengths of wooden sticks. Fix them together with a hammering nail. The two must be spaced as wide as your footing needs to be. Measure the distance from your footing needs to start. Find the center point and mark this with a nail. At the other end of your footing mark out exactly the same. Now run a length of string from one nail to the other. This drawn line should now be exactly parallel to the fence at the rear.

With a spade, mark out about 6 inches at the side of the string. Now dig this out to a depth of about 12 inches. Though the chance with the concrete mix, refer to the end of the tape for quantities. Level out with the spade. Then check it with the level. Getting the footing as level as possible will help you when you come to lay your first set of bricks. Leave the concrete for 24 hours before attempting to lay your brick.
