Who would ever hold a gun within grabbing distance? There's a thing called "retention" ; and anyone with any handgun self defense training learns how to retain their handgun. Handgun training also strongly stresses keeping a distance from an opponent. A man with a knife can close a distance of 10 feet MUCH faster than most people could ever hope deploy a handgun, so distance is VERY important. These disarming scenarios are horribly unrealistic and in this case dangerous.

I agree, the magazine is not the slide and the slide is not the action. This guy might be good at Taekwondo, but he shouldn't be talking about firearms in an authoritative or instructional manner.

Wouldn't it be more useful to disarm the assailant? I find disarming pistols to be a task that is, shall we say, wide of the mark. If it's MY pistol, I want it armed. If it's someone else's pistol, I'm ambivalent. If it is an attacker's pistol, I want it on the floor covered in his blood.

Grab the gun and push down in that direction and you are pretty much forcing your opponent's finger onto the trigger. That is the last thing you want when the gun is steering towards you (in this case, at your feet and legs). This technique puts you at great risk of getting yourself shot in the legs. The thing that a lot of Martial Artists get wrong from what I see when it comes to "hands vs. guns" is that the demonstrator almost always grabs the gun around the barrel. Grabbing a gun like that is ill-advised. If the gun is a non-revolver pistol, all the assailant needs to do (even by accident) is to pull the trigger to cause the defender to lose a chunk of their hand or maybe even a finger simply because the parts of the gun move with great speed and force. Lastly, the fact that you called the magazine (or "clip") a slide and called the slide the action drives home the fact that you are not in a position to formally teach about guns or about any martial defense ag
