How to Discipline Your Step-Children

Terry: I am Terry from St. Cloud, Minnesota, and I am wondering, what's the best way to discipline a stepchild who won't listen to me?

Shannon Craft: Terry, I think the very first thing you need to think about is that you and your significant other need to make sure that you are together. Because coming up with a plan on how to discipline a child is something that has to involve both parents. That being said, I want to say that I think the most important point is that before you can be effective as a disciplinarian in the life of a stepchild, you have to have gained their respect and affection.

This may seem a little counterintuitive, but if you think about it, you are much more likely to try to aim to please someone that you respect.
