Christine Buck: Welcome back and it’s Friday so that means we are going to talk about What Matters Most. And today our life coach Dieter Pauwels is talking about purpose.
Dieter Pauwels: Purpose, I think this is what matters most.
Christine Buck: What your purpose in life is?
Dieter Pauwels: Purpose is very important because it gives you a sense of significance. We all want to feel that our lives matter, right.
Christine Buck: Right.
Dieter Pauwels: Purpose gives you that. On the other hand, purpose is more than just your court, of your own self. It’s beyond your own identity. It allows you to make a contribution to something that is bigger than yourself and everybody ultimately wants to serve other people.
Christine Buck: And everybody has a different purpose or feels as though they have a different purpose. Sometimes it’s spiritual or religious. Sometimes, it’s just all about work.
Dieter Pauwels: It could be if you think about like a compass in their compass, that’s for me the purpose. It’s a compass that is calibrated by a one hand. You have a unique talent, unique resources and on the other hand it is calibrated by your values and beliefs and that is different for everybody.
Christine Buck: What’s one big mistake that a lot of people make that you see?
Dieter Pauwels: I think that people tends to believe that there’s only one thing they’re supposed to do while they are here where I think that’s a misconception. If we don’t find that then we sell it for something else. And when people do that, they die emotionally.
Christine Buck: Well also because if you lose that one thing then you’re left with no sense of purpose.
Dieter Pauwels: Uh-huh, a lot of people who retire fall in that trap because they don’t seem to connect with something that gives their life significance and meaning.
Christine Buck: That’s true. A lot of times when people do retire and you ask them if they enjoy retirement, they’re more depressed.
Dieter Pauwels: They’re kind of lost in the beginning.
Christine Buck: Yeah.
Dieter Pauwels: They need to connect with something that feels so true for them at their core and it’s difficult.
Christine Buck: Right. Now, you think Lance Armstrong is a perfect example of someone who lives a life on purpose, why?
Dieter Pauwels: You see with Lance Armstrong, the guy got diagnosed with cancer in the beginning go his career and he overcame cancer but what he did by using his talent as a world class athlete you know he wanted—seven times but he made this more than just about the—and he has created an organization called Lift Strong that is attracting so many people around the world to create awareness and to raise money to fight this disease.
Christine Buck: And do you think often sometimes when someone has given a sentence like well, you know, you have cancer or there is something that’s traumatic in your life but then your sense of purpose becomes much bigger.
Dieter Pauwels: Yeah.
Christine Buck: It can’t be and for him it seems that was the case.
Dieter Pauwels: I think so many people around the globe, by using his talents and his skills. And that’s the key. We all have been given certain resources and talents and these are our gifts to the world. So, it’s important that we discover what they are and then find a way to express these things. It could be through work. It could be through other things in life because we play different roles. You’re a mother, you’re a spouse, you’re a famous anchor, you have all the roles that you play so that—
Christine Buck: That cracks me up, yeah.
Dieter Pauwels: Yeah.
Christine Buck: Because I am.
Dieter Pauwels: So, the question is how can we express more of when we really are into those different roles as we play?
Christine Buck: Well, I think next Friday because we don’t have a lot of times right now. And is it possible that you’re going to answer how you find, you know, what your purpose is?
Dieter Pauwels: Absolutely.
Christine Buck: And what if you find it and then all of a sudden you’re not fulfilled and it’s not—
Dieter Pauwels: That means it’s not your purpose.
Christine Buck: I know but what if you wasted a lot of time on it?
Dieter Pauwels: Well, you got to do some self discovery first.
Christine Buck: Okay.
Dieter Pauwels: If you want to talk about it next week—
Christine Buck: I would love to talk about that next week because we only have unless you can sum it up in about seconds.
Dieter Pauwels: Let’s do it in next week.
Christine Buck: Yeah.
Dieter Pauwels: Yeah, tune in next week.
