Divide by 10
In this problem, we need to find 60÷10. Let us use models to divide 60 by 10. Let us use place value models to divide 60 by 10. Here, we’re not only using models but we’re going to use place value models to divide 60 by 10.
The first is we need to show 60 which is the dividend using 10 which is our divisor. To do that, I am going to take a box and I am going to divide this box into six columns as best as I can. We have our six rows but we need to have it by 10, so we’re going to go 10. I just drew my model and so, I have 60 squares divided by 10. I showed 60 broken up into 10 rows.
What we need to do is separate the model, so there is one 10 to each group. What I'm going to do is I'm going to separate by color. I'm separating each row. If you can tell here, I divided them up into the groups ten, so I have one 10. This is one 10. This is another 10, here’s a ten. I broke this up into tens. We have to count how many groups of tens we have. We have 6 groups of 10. The number of groups represents 60÷10, so 60÷10 is 6.
Remember that we can use place value models to divide by 10. For example, if you divide 60 by 10 using 10 models, separate the model, so there is one 10 in each group. The number of group represents 60÷10. Dividing a number by 10 is the same as removing a zero from the right side of the number. If we divide by 10, it’s the same thing as taking the 60 and taking away the 0 and you get your answer.
