Amy E.: Hello, I am Amy E on the Cutting Edge Hairshow for scissorboy.com and we are here on Rodeo Drive, we are going to go meet Theodore Leaf over at his salon in Beverly Hills. I am going to see a Beverly Hills Blow Out. We are here at the Chris McMillan salon in Beverly Hills, and this is Theodore Leaf.
Theodore Leaf: Hello!
Amy E.: And this is his model --
Theodore Leaf: This is my house model Kelly.
Kelly: Kelly.
Amy E.: Oh look! She says her name.
Theodore Leaf: It's all about branding.
Amy E.: Is it?
Theodore Leaf: You kind of have to make sure that everybody knows who is doing this girl's hair.
Amy E.: Right, and she walks down the salon, and you see her name that's advertisement. Maybe you know the client. They might come to you.
Theodore Leaf: I actually started doing it because of fashion shows, because I would do fashion shows and I have like six models lined up,- well that's the other thing, you don't lose your smock. So that's the other thing, because no one is going to steal it from you, but the other thing is fashion shows, and this is great branding. So I always take them to New York.
Amy E.: How do you brand yourself?
Theodore Leaf: What I have my website, I have my business card, thank-you notes with my logo, I also do these, which is - I saw this in a store and they were like, oh join my fan club. It was a really great, easy way for me to get clients info because it's very like - its very light and fun. They join my fan club, like they love their hair.
Any E.: I am going to join.
Theodore Leaf: Okay you are going to join.
Kelly: I want to join.
Theodore Leaf: Okay you can join, everyone can join. See it works, right? Everybody wants to join. Well, this is like a perfect representation of how I like my clients to be taking care of after a shampoo. We do a chopstick, nice comb out.
Any E.: It looks like she is going to walk out the door like this.
Theodore Leaf: Yeah, I don't want my clients with this like trippy hair, like they always look chic. So when they sit down, they don't feel like, oh I am like all grows, then its bright lighting.
Amy E.: Like making all messed up --
Theodore Leaf: Yeah. So I always use a chopstick so they look nice and clean. In a salon, like we work, I don't know, there is like 15 or 20 stylists, like you have to differentiate yourself from everybody else. So my cape is branded, my clients come out of the shampoo bowl looking in certain way, it's sort of changes the level of experience for her. I feel better about what I am doing as well.
Amy E.: So we are going to do a blow dry today, right?
Theodore Leaf: We are going to show you like my classic blow dry. I am doing this since I used to work in Atlanta, and it's made me a lot of money, and given me - it gives you a lot of kudos, because if you can really finish out hair, people respect you and they trust you to cut their hair, they trust you to color their hair, they trust you to do a lot of things, if you can really give them a real blow out, that will last for days.
Amy E.: Yes. So what's the first step in doing a great blow out?
Theodore Leaf: So the first step is just a really shampoo condition, just whatever you want to use on their hair type. We just did some highlights on her a few weeks ago, as I decided to give her a little moisture. And then comb out, and literally it starts just like this, and I am just going to section her off with my chopstick and I just take one section down here at the bottom, and I do this all the time, so I pretty much have like a map of how I do everyone's head. It's funny when people come in for a blow dry, and they are like, oh you know this is how I like it. Like pretty much, I could do this blow dry on everyone, and they are happy. It's sort of a catchall. I am just going to use a little bit of a smoothing syrum on the edges, and I always --
Amy E: What will that do?
Theodore Leaf: It's just going to de-frizz and I just use it on the edges and a little bit towards the mid shaft. She has really thick coarse hair, and it's highlighted. So this just adds that layer of shine, make sure it's all glorious, and it smells good too, right? And then my nozzle actually has a slant on it if you notice that, so I can direct where the air is going. So not always a nozzle, but it's tipped a little bit, and then I have all these brushes here and I start with my biggest one.
