The final section features some fast pace drills to help players build confidence with some of the shots demonstrated in this program.
This drill starts with a short feed for Colindy to hit and approach, with the coach just allowed the junior to approach and volley. If the feed is bad the approaching junior can reject the feed. With two juniors the player who wins the point goes to the baseline to feed the next ball. Play this drill in the full singles court or cross court in the doubles half court to work on doubles skills. Play until one player wins ten points.
This next drill starts with Colindy standing one step behind the service line. The ball is fed so she hits a conventional first volley and not a swing volley to start the point. With the coach just allowed the junior to hit the first volley and play off the point. Like the last drill if there are two juniors the player who wins the last point feeds the next ball. You can play this drill in the full singles court or cross court in the doubles half court to work on skills for doubles.
This exercise focuses on the swing volley. Colindy starts three steps inside the baseline, the feed allows the ball from the opposite baseline; Colindy then moves in and hits a swing volley to start the point. With the coach just allow the junior to move in, hit the swing volley and then play out the point. With two juniors, the junior who wins the last point feeds the next ball. Play in the full singles court or cross court in the doubles half court to work on doubles skills.
This drill starts with Colindy two steps inside the service line. The point starts when she hits an overhead. If the feed is bad, she can ask for a replay, but must call out reject before hitting the ball. With two juniors, whoever wins the last point feeds the next ball. Play in the full singles court or to built doubles skills cross court in the doubles half court.
This drill works on defense and counter punching an attacking player. The point starts with the feeder at the net. Colindy starts on the baseline and has options to hit a defensive lob, topspin offensive lob, passing shot, or setup for a passing shot by dipping the ball at the volley or speed. Play until one player wins ten points. This drill helps players develop the all important element of disguise under realistic game like conditions.
This fast pace drill combines many skills and also adds the element of fitness. The feeder starts with four balls and continues to play at a quick pace until all four balls are used. As you can see, some of the points are short and others last longer. Volleys, overheads, drop shots, even flick shots could be a part of this exercise. The goal of the hitter is to make every shot and to win four points in a row. The goal of the feeder is to challenge the hitter to work hard but allow them to win each point as long as they maintain intensity and hang tough until it's over. Well done Colindy!
