[Inaudible 00:00:10 - 00:00:17]
Justin Kredible: They can kind of -- they basically read things about you. What you are wearing and they may step up. Do you believe any SP extrasensory perception, psychic stuff? Not at all.
Female Speaker: No.
Justin Kredible: I am going to try to mess with your. I'll try to get inside your head and then, get inside your head as well. So what I want you to do is participate along with us and you have no idea what I am about to do. It's like swear. This one, use a little bit math. I want you to think of any number between 1 and 10, don't tell me what it is. Got it? Now, multiply that number by 9, got it? Okay, so if you have a two digit number now, what I want you to do is add those two digits together, so you have a new number, okay. Take that number and subtract 5 from it. Now this number you have now, I can you to correspond it to a letter in the alphabet. A is 1, B is 2, C is 3, D is 4, E is 5, F is 6. You got a letter? Okay, that's your letter.
Now think of a European country that starts with that letter. Okay, got it? Okay, got one?
Female Speaker: I think so.
Justin Kredible: Got one, okay, I'll give you a second you can spin the globe find one. Now with this country I want you to take the second letter of the country and think of a zoo animal that starts with that letter. I know this is all really random. So just concentrate, wait a second. That's preposterous, there's no elephants in Denmark. Did I get you? I hope so, I am Justin Kredible and I am bringing magic bag. This is Turning Tricks. In this series, it's all about showing you how to blow people's minds like I just did.
Some of the tricks we are going to do today, can be a little intricate. So relax, don't worry, don't panic, just rewind if you need to. You are going to need a pen, a coin and a matchbook. Get ready, we are going to try in some tricks.

[Applause]
Wow! Elephants in Denmark. How do you know that? Oh! My gosh, I am a mind reader. The trick you just saw me perform in the intro is call Mental Miracle. It's a great addition to this anytime magic episode, because it truly is, something that you could do anytime anywhere. You need no props as a trick where the magic happens inside their head, which is what it's all about. The trick uses math and basically, it's this clever mathematical concept that in most cases -- in a good percent of cases gets everybody to thing of elephants in Denmark.
You haven't think of a number between 1 and 10, say not 1 and not 10. So we kind of have a one digit number between 1 and 10. And I asked them to multiply that number by 9, okay. Everyone is going to have a different number at this point, if they thought of different number. But the clever thing is when you have them add that two digit number together, it's always going to equal 9. 2 times 9 is 18, 1+8 is 9. 3 times 9 is 27, 2+7 is 9. 9 times 9 is 81, 8+1 is 9. So at this point everyone is going to have 9.
So you have them take that number 9 and subtract 5 from it. Now every one is going to have 4. Now you are set, you have to correspond that number to a letter in the alphabet. You say, A is 1, B is 2, C is 3, D is 4, E is 5, F is 6. You know it's going to be D, it's going to be 4. However, by giving them all these options it keeps the whole presentation seeming very random, alright. So now they are thinking of the letter D, ask him to think of a European country that starts with a letter D, Denmark if they know their geography. Let them take their time with this. You don't want to rush it, you want to make sure that they are sure, they are getting the math right, because if you rush it, it's very easy to doing all this math in their head. They are going to get something wrong and the punch, the ending is not going to be there for them.
So take your time, they correspond that number to a letter in the alphabet, they end up with D, they think of Denmark. And then ask them to take the second letter of that country which is E and think of a circus animal. Most of the time, they are going to think of an elephant, circus animal, zoo animal. Elephant is typically the animal that people think of first, when it comes to E. And then, kind of take a beat and really play up the whole mind to do thing. Just really work on the theatrics. Why don't you give this math down, it's really all about presentation and really present this trick as if you are kind of getting inside their head and you are kind of like, now wait a second, that's crazy there's no elephants in Denmark.
Alright, I love this trick and what's awesome about this, is not just a one-on-one trick. You can do it for a whole bunch of people at once. And a lot of times, everybody will be like -- they'll be freaked out, because everybody will have elephants in Denmark. They are going to compare notes. Now the math is so kind of complex, when they try to think back on it, they don't remember every step. They remember that first number and one person is like well, I had 2, I had 7, I had 4 that's why, and that's what great about this trick. Mental Miracle anytime, anywhere. Get the math down, memorize it, you'll freak people out.
Alright so here's a couple of key points to remember when performing the mental miracle and I highly recommend you learn the math on this one, and really perform this one, because it's really great to have something that you can whip out, when you have no props because you never want to get caught with your guard down. So that's what this trick is all about.
When performing it, I want you to remember to take the math slow. Take your time with it, because people when put on the spot, it's easier for them to mess up the math. I know for me, it would be tough. So take your time with it and that will ensure that the finale is killer, alright. And really play it up, act like you have some mental abilities, make it a psychic stunt, because it's way more fun that way.
[Applause]
Alright, I am going to show you guys a quick rack at anytime, any place trick. You just need a coin and a magic marker which is going to be our magic wand. This is Tia who is going to be the lovely assistant. I am going to try and freak her out. Are you ready Tia?
Tia: I am ready.
Justin Kredible: Alright, here we go. I am going to squeeze the coin in my fist. We'll just give it three taps with magic wand. Here we go; one, two, three. See it's behind the ear, you guys see this. That's not the real trick. Let's try it again, here we go. Instead of a tap, we just give it a wave with the magic marker. There we go, that really makes the coin disappear. Could this be, right?
[Applause]
Alright, thank you. This one is called, Play it by ear and it's really great, anytime, any place trick. All you need is a coin and a marker and it's funky, it's novel. It's kind of good hangout out of a bar trick to impress members of the opposite sex. You want to know how it works?
Tia: I do.
Justin Kredible: Because you want to do this. I know you want to impress people with this. Okay, so what I want you to do at home is, I grab a coin, grab a pen, grab a pen and follow along with me. Alright this is a simple trick.
[Music Playing]
Justin Kredible: We have a coin and the marker. It can be a quarter whatever. Basically, this trick it's kind of a version of a sucker trick, which is a Tarbell magic, where people think that they are learning a secret of the trick and you kind of throw him for a loop. So here's what happens. We put the coin in my left hand and I am going to tell you, that we are going to try to make the coin disappear by waving the magic marker. And I go once, twice, three times. So at first it's this cheesy kind of pen behind the ear vanishing trick and in order to do that you can first off, if my ears kind of stick out.
So instead of using a pen, which probably won't wedge in there. I use a marker, it works well. Pen or marker whatever works well for you. Here's the motion; one, two, three and what I do is as I am doing this, you want to make the motion consistent. One, two, three as oppose to one, two, three. So in order to do that and get really good at getting that pen behind my ear, I actually put it behind my ear each time. You'll see I go; one, two, three. So that third time it's nice and fluent, okay.
So that's kind of the sucker ending; one, two, three the pen disappeared and what I do is I am going to turn and kind of show the pen behind my ear, point to it, give this great misdirection and at the same time I am going to quickly just ditch that coin in my pocket and make a fist again. So one, two, three. Look it's behind my ear and then, I am going like this, making a fist again, as if nothing happened and then I kind of come back to this position, I am like, I am just playing with you. Let's do this for real and we take the pen in my hand and we kind of give it a wave and a little rub and the coin really disappears, that's the true ending that's play it by ear.
Alright, so a couple of bullet points to remember with play it by ear. I want you to really practice landing that pen behind your ear exactly when you want it to and the repetition is consistent. You'll want to keep the pace the same. And remember this false ending, that I am thinking the trick is all about making the pen disappear is a killer misdirection for vanishing that coin, they are not going to be expecting it. So when it comes time to really make the coin disappear, I want you to take it slow, really make it see like a mysterious magical moment and it will blow them away.
[Applause]
Alright, people it's now time to play with fire. Give me an Ouuu! I am going to do a trick that you are going to love if you are a part of. We are going to use these matches, I am going to pluck one out here, perfect hold that for me. I am going to close the pack up for safety purposes, and are you right hand or left handed?
Tia: Right.
Justin Kredible: So hold your right hand flat for me. I'll give this -- I'll burn it out really quick and I am going to shake it. Alright, here we go. I am just going to give a little squeeze here. Now, tell me if you feel anything. See as I open my hand you might feel a little burst of warmth.
Tia: Yeah.
Justin Kredible: Did you feel that?
Tia: Yeah.
Justin Kredible: Isn't that weird?
Tia: It sounds weird.
Justin Kredible: Swear. Okay, I am going to touch the matchbook again. I want you to open the matchbook, open up towards the audience. Not only, the burnt match has reappeared, but show them it's actually re-attached, isn't that crazy, matchbook miracle. I am going to clap at that one. I fixed it, yeah.
[Music Playing]
Okay, this is a great trick for several reasons. First off, people are naturally pyromaniacs. I know I am, you see a total pyro. She's a total pyro, right? Seriously she was lighting things out. But what's also great about this trick is that it's a killer bar trick, because every bar or a restaurant very often there's matches there. So all the props you need everywhere you go. Let me walk you through how you do this. It does take a little bit of preparation. So you need to have 30 seconds alone with this matchbook before, you do it. So if you wanted to prepare this before you go out for the night or something and you know you might whip this trick out with friends. Here's the preparation okay. We'll get rid of that burnt match.
Basically, you need to have one match, you need to burn one match and have it in there before you start and I am going to show you how you can seal the fact those aren't your burn match in there. So starting with a fresh pack of all nicely unused matches. I am going to take one that's in the middle. I am going to kind of bend it back, I am going to take another match may from the back, it won't be noticeable. I am going to close the matchbook, I am going to light that one match while it's still in the matchbook, blow it out nice and quick, okay. Excellent! Let it cool off. That's the preparation.
So now you see we have got this one burnt match inside the matchbook. I am going to bend this match back and you'll notice when it's bent back. In order to basically, conceal I am just going to hold the matches like I probably naturally would and naturally just with your thumb covering up that pre-burnt match. I am going to shut the matchbook, kind of hold that with my thumb and with my fist kind of in this position, my hands are totally clean and empty and it looks like you are displaying the matchbook just as a person naturally would.
So I am going to open this up and so I am playing this right to Tia. I am going to take one match out excellent. I am going to hand this to Tia. This puts your attention on here, she is holding the match. In the meantime, what I am going to do, is I am going to shut the matchbook in a way, that gets that matches bend back, back into it's original position, okay. Here is what we are going to do. We are going to rotate it. I am going to bring the matchbook around towards my thumb, at the same time I am just letting that match kind of naturally fall right back into place and I am shutting it over. It all happens in this 360 rotation move, alright. I'll do that again.
I've got the match hidden under the thumb. I am going to shut the matchbook. My index finger kind of helps guide that match right back into place and then, I close the pack and I tuck it in. Now the end of the trick is pretty much done, you are set. Now all we have to do is light this match and make it vanish. Here's how we do that. I will blow it out right away, so you hold that matchbook on your hand, okay. We are going to shake this out.
Now what I am doing, when I am shaking that match and letting it cool off, this is happening really fast. The hand is really quicker than the eye at this point. That burnt match I am going to shake it and on the down swing is just drop it, throw it to the floor and what's happening is because you kind of turn away, you are kind of protecting them from this burnt match and getting the smoke away. So you have all this misdirection, it's a natural moment. You just throw it down, but keep shaking. I am going to throw it down and as you can see, threw it I am still shaking and then, I am going to pretend to put in my left hand. Aaao! And act like it's still hot. This motion is totally invisible when you are doing it in a bar, with kind of bar lighting, a restaurant it's dark especially the floors are not lit, because the floors are dirty and then, really I don't want to highlight that.
So the throwing down motion is totally covered excellent misdirection. So after I toss it, I keep shaking a bit, pretend to put it in my left hand, Oh! Aww! Like it's still hot and then, it's just kind of acting here, what I am going to do is I am going to make this a very dramatic moment. I am just going to rub this like this, as if I am somehow making that match teleport itself back into the box.
Now here's what's killer, a little extra thing about the power of a suggestion and when I did this a little squeeze and I said, and I was like, do you feel that, do you feel like a little burst of warmth? They do, something about you suggesting it, they feel a little burst of warmth. I don't know why, but it really works, okay. It's the magic suggestion. So you feel a little burst of warm when I grabbed it out with my hand. Okay, you are totally clean. The magic is happening in their hand which is the most powerful type of magic. Tia go ahead, take the matchbook, I want you to open it up, show it to the people. Look at the that. That burnt match has not only reappeared, but it has reattached itself. That's the matchbook miracle. Practice it, do it tonight you'll love it.
Alright, a few reminders with Matchbook Miracle. Remember when you are holding the matchbook, concealing to that burnt match. Be natural with it. It's a very natural gesture, so don't be paranoid, no one is expecting anything yet. And really rehearse the folding over motion of the matchbook, when you fold that burnt match back into the pack, get it down before you perform it for people. And I am telling you, you are going to love doing this trick when you are out a bar. There's always matchbooks there, the environment is right and the lighting is perfect. So when you are waving that match and you drop it to vanish it, no one is going to see it. It's going to be great.
[Applause]
