Will Hamilton: Its Sunday June 21st. Welcome to FYB's Wimbleton preview, the tournament starts tomorrow. I'm going to pick Roger Federer to win the men side not really going out on the line there, especially I know that the defending champ Rafael Nadal is out. I'm going with Venus Williams on the women's side; she has won a three of the last four years she is just really tough glass-court player. So, even though she's been struggling a little bit, but inconsistent for past two tournaments. I think she is going to get together and she is going to win Wimbleton.
Let's quickly go over a typical shots sequence that you're going to see with Roger. Two shot sequence that allows him to get control over the point. It's something that he is used with great effect against all his opponents expect for Nadal, this sequence doesn't really work to well against Nadal. But particularly on grass, what Federer likes to do is, in a backhand to backhand rally I'll say this is Roger up here. Roger is going to slice across court backhand to his opponent, and the ball is going to stay real low taking his opponents a righty in this case. Taking that ball down the line of the low slice is a tough shot. So, Roger is not going to expect this to happen too often, sometimes it happens, but not too often. So, Roger is going to be expecting a cross-court ball and it's likely to be a cross-court ball that his opponent just rolls back, doesn't try to do too much with the ball because again, its tough be aggressive on a ball that's stays real low.
So because Roger knows his ball is coming, he is going to try and hit an inside out forehand, he is going to run around the ball, hit it inside out forehand and obviously Roger forehand is money. So he can use bunch of options, he can go with the relatively flat ball into the corner, he can put a little bit more spin on it and angle little bit, pull it up on off the court or he can turn the ball and crank it to the open court. Roger is going be in control at this point, he is probably going to win most of these points.
Now the reason this sequence doesn't work and he probably -- already guessing is because Nadal is a lefty, but it's also because Nadal hits within unreal amount of topspin. So Federer, he doesn't do this as much as any more, I think he is figured it out, he didn't do this against Nadal and Madrid too often, of course, Federer won that match. What Federer used to do was slices the ball cross-court and the ball is still low, but Nadal because he has so much topspin, he can hook it out wide, get Federer on the run or he can pull it down the line and again Federer is on the run. Federer has a tone of court to cover in this case, that's why it's not an effective shot. Normally, Federer basically he has to slice to right anything, it's okay and probably going to get a shot somewhere in here and I him run around most of these, but, of course, now Federer says, he covered the entire court. So that's one of the reasons that Nadal has had a lot of success against Federer. He's neutralized that slice and he actually going to tack it, so it really puts Federer in a top situation and again it's too bad that Nadal is injured. I hope he gets well soon, so Raf if you're watching this, you'll probably not get better soon, we need you on the tour, you're great end to Federer's young. So, anyway I hope you guys like the preview, I'm looking forward to the tournament, again Federer on the men side, Venus on the women side, but I'm expecting some real great tennis.
