In this segment, we are going to discuss and work on two ball dribbling. One of the theories behind adding the second ball is making the drills harder than it would be in a game, therefore, creating a level of difficulty that would be much harder than you would encounter in the game. So, when we go back to the game situation and dribble with one ball, it would become much easier for the player to execute.
So what we are going to do right now is just take the two balls, we are going to get into a good stance, knees bent. This is called two balls same. We are going to dribble it at the same time. The ball will hit the floor and hit the players’ hands at the same time. We could do this for 10 seconds. And then we are going to move into two ball different or machine gun. One ball is going to be hitting his hand while the other ball is hitting the floor and we want to go a little bit quicker.
If you here the sound basketball is making, it should that of a machine gun. We want to go a little quicker if we can. When you are starting out, there are a very difficult drill. It is not a problem if you lose the ball, go get them, start again and try to dribble.
The third one we are going to work on is high-low dribble. He is going to take one ball and try to dribble it as low as you can. His right hand right now, and the other ball as high as he can, so high and low, but switch it. Let us go left low, and right high. Get lower with the left if you can. We are trying to go high, low and control two dribbles. All right let us stop there.
One of the things when you do the two ball dribbles, you are going to realize that your dominant hand, the hand that you are strong with, most people your right hand is going to perform much better than your other hand, your left hand, or your non-dominant hand. So, you need to work a little bit extra hard and concentrate on that non-dominant hand to make sure you will be able to complete the drills.
The next drill we are going to do is called two-ball kill. We are going to dribble the balls up as high as we can get them and then we are going to bring them down quickly and kill the dribble. So, we are going to bring them up, and bring them down, trying to kill the dribble. Good.
And the next one we are going to do and the last one of this session, is two-ball chase. What Ian is going to do is just dribble the balls in front of him, and one ball is going to chase the other. Right now, he is going around the back. Let us dribble them right in front now. Let us just do them in a circle ring in front of you.
You can do two-ball chase in front, and one ball is going around the other. Try to make sure that the ball handler is looking up, he just changed direction. We can do the two-ball chase around the right leg. Let us go around the right leg, change direction. And let us go two-ball chase around the left leg, change direction. And let us go two ball chase figure eight. So he is going to do figure eight around the right leg, bring it to the middle, take it around the left leg, and that is very good. All right, let us stop there. Again, when Ian started to do these drills when he was first, second, third, fourth grader, they are very difficult. The balls will be rolling in 18 different directions. We would gather them, and he has put a lot of time and effort to get to this level where he can handle like that.
So, do not be discouraged when you start doing the two-ball drills. They are difficult and they take dome practice.
