So, tip number one, drive slower. It has to be said the very best thing you can do to help the environment with your car, is to stop driving it. But you may not have that option. Lot of us work in areas where we can't walk so easily to get there or ride public transportation.
So if you're going to drive, drive slower instead. Most cars perform best at speeds of between 50 to 60 miles an hour. Not too slow and not too fast is how to drive smart and start saving some green at the same time.
Get better tires. A lot of times, we have a tendency to get what's cheaper and we end up paying for it in the long run. A staggering 20% of your car's fuel consumption is used up just overcoming tire roll resistance. How can you drive smart and save green in this circumstance?
Well, the answer is to buy quality tires that get great reviews. They might cost a little more but they will perform better. Remember that under-inflated tires will cost you more in gas builds, so make sure you keep them pumped up.
Lightening the load in your car, so I bet there are things in your car's trunk that don't need to be there. You can go through items you're regularly carrying; if you don't really need it, dump it. I know that I went through my trunk and I found a ton of heavy stuff that I didn't even know I had in there that I didn't even need. So you can drive smart and save green with a lighter load. It will also help your car to be more fuel-efficient with the lightened load and a less weight.
Switch off your engine while you're waiting. So if you're waiting for somebody to come out of their house or you are in a drive-through line and you know you are going to be there for more than a couple minutes, it's best to switch off your engine. Because restarting your engine burns roughly about the same amount as one minute of idle time. So if you think you're going to be idle in your car for more than a minute, cut the engine. You will save gas and money too.
The last thing I have for you is to drive smoothly. This one shouldn't need to be mentioned, but it should be the unspoken part of 'Drive Smart and Drive Green and Save Green'. Erratic driving with sudden accelerating and hard braking uses up extra gas, and it puts extra wear and tear on your car, which means extra cost to you and the environment.
Learning the Drive Smart and Saving Green is really commonsense like I was saying in the beginning of the video. If you really need your car, then learn to drive it responsibly and sensibly. But if you can't walk easily to where you need to go, then drive smart and save some green when you can't do that.
