When you’re thinking about bringing nature into your home, there is no better place to start in
the kitchen. what we eat has a huge effect on our well being more so over the longer term than
perhaps any other factor. We all need different things from our diet depending on our physical
condition and our requirements change significantly different times in our lives too. But a good
starting point is a mix of fresh foods from all of the food groups. And fresh food are certainly the
flavor of the month these days and you know a food trend is taking over when fast food joins are
falling over themselves to serve us salad instead of burgers and fries. While this country is still
has a lot of people who fit the clinical definition of obese we are becoming more and more tune
to the idea of healthy eating. Everything from cooking with less fats and oil to preserving the
nutritional value of vegetables by steaming them rather than boiling them.
But more so than how we cook is what we cook that has the biggest impact on our health. One
big reason for the new focus on fresh foods is that we now know a lot more about how our
body’s deal with process foods. Fresh foods have a tendency not to stay fresh for very long
which use to be a problem for food manufacturers then they discovered away to preserve foods
by hydrogenating the natural fats and oils they content. As they take on hydrogen atoms they
become trans-fat which are much more stable than the fats they we’re place that means the food
lasses longer, trouble is our body’s aren’t necessarily cut out to handle this trans-fat. Remember
when cholesterol was just bad, well we now know there are in fact two types of cholesterol the
good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. Trans-fat has been shown not only to raise the level of bad
cholesterol but also the simultaneously lower the levels of good cholesterol. That’s a double
whammy when it comes to coronary disease. So much soda that the FDA now requires trans-fat
content to be listed for all package foods, you will find it on our nutrition panel next to the
saturated fat content. The best way of avoiding trans-fat is to stir clear of process food were
possible something we’ve all been doing more and more anyway as we become more aware of
how important our diet is and keeping us healthy.
