Riane: Do you know what one of the most popular places to take a date is? Well you're about to find out.
Audra sat down with the author of the man plan, Whitney Casey, and the two talked dating ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ when eating sushi.
Audra Lowe: Thanks a lot Riane. Well, you know, it’s never easy eating sushi with friends letting low on a date.
Whitney Casey: Yeah. But it’s one of the number things to do with on a date. but you know, the best thing to do is to watch this piece because we actually sat down with Erica Harpold and one of the top Sushi chefs in the country, his name is Tyson Cole in from Uchi in Austin Texas who knew.
Right. They’re one of the best sushi restaurants would be in Austin Texas but he gives the best advice. And this is not just for you going on a date; you men out there also need to list to his advice.
Audra Lowe: Anytime. All right, take a look.
Erica Harpold: What?
Tyson Cole: What you don’t need any soy sauce.
Erica Harpold: No soy sauce?
Tyson Cole: No soy sauce.
Erica Harpold: All right, we’re taking this away. But, I see everyone eats soy sauce.
Tyson Cole: American people love to do it. There was the flavor and the integrity of the sushi itself.
The ultimate Sashimi. On this one put a little soy might be good.
Erica Harpold: Japan.
Tyson Cole: You only need as much soy sauce as necessary and what you put not is wasteful. A little bit more.
Erica Harpold: More?
Tyson Cole: That’s plenty.
Erica Harpold: Like that?
Tyson Cole: Just like that.
Erica Harpold: Okay.
Tyson Cole: This is you’re not filleting to top like its soup. Is it soup?
Erica Harpold: No. it’s not soup.
Tyson Cole: It’s soy sauce.
Erica Harpold: A really salty soup if it were. Next order of business but I think this is pretty big business, chopsticks.
Tyson Cole: For the chopstick in the V of your hand and on this second finger like that.
Erica Harpold: on the second finger and the V okay?
Tyson Cole: And then you scrub the top like that and then up here. But if that’s too hard for you and you go to a really incredible sushi place like Uchi, the can bring you some that are for beginners like this.
Erica Harpold: That was so easy. But this, you’ll get main fun of with these too.
Tyson Cole: You probably will.
Erica Harpold: Okay. so we’re eating something like this, we don’t need our chopsticks.
Tyson Cole: No chopsticks.
Erica Harpold: A lot of pressure off there.
Tyson Cole: You want to grab it with your fingers and you want to eat it in one bite.
Erica Harpold: Okay.
Tyson Cole: Because if you bite it in half, it’s all going to fall apart and waste it. Anyway, you’re going to be completely embarrassed.
Erica Harpold: Yeah.
Tyson Cole: And it’s also going to taste better in one bite and it’s going to fall apart in your mouth.
Erica Harpold: Okay.
Tyson Cole: Next step, you want to eat it upside down.
Erica Harpold: Eat it upside down?
Tyson Cole: Which means put the fish on your pallete.
Erica Harpold: Pour me some sake.
Tyson Cole: Tentaka Cuni Juni. Have you ever had cold sake before?
Erica Harpold: I have and I usually have it hot.
Tyson Cole: Hot?
Erica Harpold: Hot sake.
Tyson Cole: Hot sake is the cheapest sake. You have to have it cold.
Erica Harpold: That’s why they have it hot.
Tyson Cole: If you want some sake, then I’ll pour yours into your cup dish. And since we’re using these boxes, you want to fill this all the way to the top. Then, we’re going to pour all these into the box and drink it from the box which is excellent or you drink on a glass. But either way, whatever is left in the box, it’s what’s supposed to be good luck.
Erica Harpold and Tyson Cole: Kampai!
Whitney Casey: Kampia! Kampai!
Erica Harpold: Oh, hello.
Whitney Casey: So, you could really drink it out of the box?
Tyson Cole: You’re supposed to drink it on the box. That’s good luck for the rest of your life.
Erica Harpold: Is it? We all need some luck.
Audra Lowe: Okay, that, I didn’t have any idea that a lot of those things had to be happening. For example, I didn’t know that you could get beginner chopsticks?
Whitney Casey: Yeah.
Audra Lowe: Because I would have been asking for those long time ago.
Whitney Casey: I would have practiced it home with those. Had Tyson been there to give me those? He just popped up and said, “You can have this.” and I was like, “Those are ingenious, every women should practice with those.”
Audra Lowe: That’s half the battle there just knowing how to hold the chopsticks properly so that you don’t feel like an idiot like quickly, quickly go to the mouth that. But, when you’re on the date, it’s awkward.
Whitney Casey: You know what? He said two interesting way when I was there listening. You saw me at the end and kind of jumped in. I was like, “Did you say sake?”
But, he also said that you can actually pick up the roll if you go to a rally good sushi restaurant, they should make the rolls small enough that you can pick them up. You should never bite a roll in half. See, you need to put the whole thing in your mouth.
So, if you go to some sushi restaurant, we’re making these super-sized me rolls, not probably the best sushi restaurant. Like he always says that that the best tastes of sushi is in the small roll. But, you can use your hand.
Audra Lowe: And see, that’s the thing, if you can’t eat the whole thing, I mean, I’m always like, “Hey, you know what, I’m going to do what I got to do, half and that’s it.” But, not shove the whole thing in your mouth. Now, know.
Whitney Casey: As you dip or not to dip, no soy sauce, all of that. But you know what? Sushi still is a great date. As long as you have some of these rules from Tyson, your date will be flawless.
Audra Lowe: And before we go, I have to go back to this other one, you turn it upside down, eat it whole, I don’t know.
Whitney Casey: It gets a little complicated like you’re doing acrobatics for your fish. But you know what; he really says the fish tastes so much better if you put in on the tongue first because the rice falls apart instantly.
Audra Lowe: Yeah.
Whitney Casey: And then end up getting it all over you so, not only it’s not going to taste good but you’re also going to make yourself look like an idiot.
Audra Lowe: And that’s the number one date spot. I don’t know.
Whitney Casey: It is. Sushi is the number one really it’s like because there’s something to do because dates are scary.
So, if you go to a sushi restaurant, you’re using your hands, there’s a lot to talk about; it’s not like just a dinner, an awkward dinner. It’s actually action packed. So, I think a lot of people that’s why it’s one of the top date places to go.
Audra Lowe: That’s good information. I like it. I learned something.
Whitney Casey: One of my first dates with my man was at Uchi in Austin.
Audra Lowe: Really?
Whitney Casey: Yes. so, I’m saying I’m loving the date. And the same guy came out and I was like using my chopsticks going out with this guy.
Audra Lowe: You made it through.
Whitney Casey: I made it through. He’s so my man.
Audra Lowe: All right. Thanks so much Whitney. Good to see you again.
