I wear an Insulin Pump, what is the best option for me when I exercise? Should I take my pump off, should I wear it but suspend the insulin delivery completely or shall I use a temporary reduced basal rate as my engine?
You actually have a lot of options as an insulin pump wear, make adjustments around exercise. Some pump wear is preferred to take their pump off, and they are very well need to depending on their score or what they are doing for example, I have worked with people, myself including who do a lot of running or jumping for activity, kick boxing for example. Wearing a pump can be a little challenging but it does not always stand your waistband very well while you are doing high Thai Bo type kicks.
So you very well may as a best option want to take your pump off. However, it is important to recognize that even during exercise the body needs some basal insulin to maintain blood sugar levels to prevent spikes in blood sugar. So you may need to check blood sugar more frequently if your pump is off or even if you are wearing it but you suspend insulin delivery completely, you may need to reconnect or occasionally, turn your pump back on and provide some insulin to prevent spikes relative to exercise.
What the normal, natural working paper is does during exercise is to reduce insulin levels by about half, about 50%. And normally when we encourage the youth that are reduced basal rates as an option, we ask people to start with their reduction about 50% for aerobic exercise; that is walking or biking.
Typically, that will help to maintain blood sugars during exercise, the goal is to balance, and we want to avoid the drops in blood sugar. We also want to avoid the rises in blood sugar that we may see relative to exercise. When working closely with your fit for D-team coaches, we will assist you in patterning your blood sugar responds to exercise and learning what options work best for you as a pump wear.
