Butterscotch Tutorial. What is "cyberspace?"
Michael Callahan: Hi this is Michael Callahan "Doctor File Finder" and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial on what is cyberspace? You hear the term all the time if you're listening to me you're in cyberspace? The term was coined by author William Gibson in his sci-fi novel Neuromancer in 1984. He let through a slew of words they had cyber in fort of it. But cyberspace is really just the metaphor for this non-physical world that we've created by linking millions and millions of computers together.
They note in this article on wikipedia that cyberspace isn't actual space that's even electronically or remotely controlled, is a little bit better to call it virtual space if you want to be radically correct. What's interesting to me is that on this site 123RF, this is a whole page of images that people have created trying depict what cyberspace is? And you can see there is varied from one another as many people's descriptions of cyberspace would be.
So cyberspace is essentially the world that we've created by uniting all of these computers into a mass of network. We exchange images, sounds, music, emails, and communicate news groups, and on so many ways we travel through cyberspace to different countries, different worlds, and different places on our own planet.
So that's cyberspace you can maneuver through it with just a keyboard and a mouse, you can leave it whenever you like and its there when you come back, it can be a friendly place then it can also be a dangerous place. So this is cyberspace and that's all there is to it.
