Butterscotch Tutorial
What is a "directory?"
Michael Callahan: Hi, this is Mike Callahan, "Doctor File Finder," and welcome to your butterscotch.com tutorial on what is a directory?
You hear people like me use the term directory and folder almost interchangeably and many people ask why. Well, in the time before Windows there were no folders where here in DOS, the command to change to another area is CD for change directory or go to the root directory. Now, to find out what's in the root directory, type the command DIR which stands for directory, when you type that in, you get a directory listing of everything that's in the root directory in this case. This right here that are marked with the angle brackets and DIR are directories. Program files, photos, ring tones, temporary users and so on.
So in DOS, there were no folders as such. You would change into a directory and do a listing and now I'm in the photos directory. So folders came along with Windows because the icon was -- the icon of a folder. In Windows a folder can just be representation of something on your desktop. In DOS and other operating systems the directory is an actual physical thing on your hard drive, so that's a directory and that's all there is to it.
