With thanksgiving just around the corner, we’re all thinking about food and we’ll no doubt find ourselves in the grocery store. But when you’re in there buying things for that thanksgiving feast, pick out something for our little feathered friend.
You know I figured this time of the year is one of the best times to start feeding the birds, and I’ll feed them right on until spring. Once I start, I don’t stop because they come to depend on me. The further we get into winter, the less plentiful food is and I try to do everything I can to help.
Feeding the birds just makes good sense when you think about how much of their native habitat has been destroyed either through our encroachment or natural disasters like wild fires. Let’s take a look at different ways to feed the birds and foods that they like.
Now certain birds like certain foods. Let’s say you’re interested in attracting song birds to your garden. You may want to try thistles because many birds like that particular seed. If you do, since it’s so expensive, you’ll probably want to try thistle feeder.
These Black Oil Sunflower Seeds are a little more affordable but equally attractive to song birds, like these beautiful American Goldfinches. Cracked corn and millet attracts sparrows and jays, but if you’re not fuzzy about who comes to dinner, you might just pick up one of this mixed bag of seed. There’s a little something in here for everyone.
I use a lot of different feeders but my favorite is one that I can attach directly to the window. I can watch them close up without going outside.
Now this thanksgiving when you sit down to have your feast, make sure you’ve laid one out for your birds as well.
From the garden, I’m Allen Smith.
