Maintenance, what to feed and how often? I liked to feed most of my fish twice a day, early morning and late afternoon. Bury the tank dye between flake frozen and fresh foods. I like to feed my corals as well with cyclops. The fish eat butters enough in the tank that corals get some.
Don’t forget corals are animals and need food once in a while. And feed your fish with frozen food, take tank water out and drop in a few cubes. After about five minutes, stir them around and pour them in. Don’t use tap water as you’re defeating the purpose of using of RO/DI water. Here you see, this is about right from my sixty-second rule. I like to feed the fish only as much as they will eat in about sixty seconds. Many times you have to walk a fine line as a reef keeper. Too little feeding could lead to aggression in the tank between the fish. Too much could lead to algae blooms.
You could spot feed your corals with a turkey buster, just fold the food with tank water in a cup. Draw the food in the water into the turkey buster and shoot the mixture gently at the corals. Healthy corals will grab some of the mixture and eat it. Some tank owners feed their corals everyday while others every few days or even weeks. However, corals often do find with just the leftover food they catch floating in the water.
Water changes, I prefer to change 20% a month, 10% every two weeks or 5% a week which I find to be the best. Make sure you mix up a fresh salt and RO/DI water and let it sit for at least a day. Try to get the salinity as close to the tank salinity as possible. It is a good idea to stir up the bottom when we’re moving the old water as it helps keep the sand bag from building up toxins.
